Daimler AG announced on Thursday a joint venture with BYD, the Chinese automobile and battery manufacturer, to build a research and technology center to develop electric cars in BYD’s home city of Shenzhen.

The two partners will invest $87.8 million to use as registered capital for the newly created business. The new generation of EVs developed by the joint venture will rely on Daimler’s know how in electric vehicle architecture and safety as well as BYD’s battery technology e-drive systems.

The new models will use Daimler’s expertise in electric vehicle architecture and safety, along with BYD’s excellence in battery technology and electric-drive systems. The vehicles will be marketed under a new brand jointly created and owned by Daimler and BYD.

Beijing -- BYD Company Limited and Daimler AG today signed a contract creating a 50:50 research and technology joint venture called “Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co. Ltd,” that will develop an electric vehicle for China.
BYD and Daimler will invest RMB 600 million to use as registered capital for the Joint venture. The new generation of electric vehicles developed by the joint venture will capitalize on Daimler’s know-how in electric vehicle architecture and safety as well as BYD’s excellence in battery technology and e-drive systems. Chairman Wang and Dr. Zetsche signed the joint venture contract today in Beijing. This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on March 1. Engineers, designers and other executives from both companies established working teams after the signing of the MOU to begin working on the vehicle concept. The business license for the new joint venture is subject to relevant government approval.

Daimler is a leader in sustainable mobility and in developing automotive architectures for zero-emissions driving. The company recently launched the smart fortwo electric drive and this year will introduce two Mercedes-Benz electric cars: the B-Class F-CELL with fuel cell technology as well as the battery electric A-Class E-CELL.

BYD is China’s leading manufacturer in developing advanced battery technology, a field it has invested in since 1995. The company has enjoyed rapid growth for five years after entering the automotive sector in 2003. It is the fastest growing Chinese automotive manufacturer. BYD introduced its F3DM dual-mode hybrid electric vehicle to the world in December 2008 and started direct sales to individual customers in March 2010. The company recently launched the e6, a pure electric vehicle and established itself as the first manufacturer in China to commercialize taxi business with its e6.

Dodge unveils new logo

Chrysler unveiled a new logo for the Dodge brand on Thursday . the new logo that will be used in promotional materials for its cars, as the brand moves to further distinguish its passenger cars from its trucks, which have been rebranded “Ram Truck.”

The Dodge logo has dropped the Ram's head and now features two slanted red racing stripes over the "E" of "DODGE" - written in all capital letters. The aim of the new brand logo is to promote an ideal of "forever young", according to the automaker.

The new logo has been endorsed by Dodge CEO Ralph Gilles, according to Automotive News, and will be used for all Dodge vehicles beginning with the 2011 Dodge Charger.

According to Dodge, the logo exudes a “forever young” attitude and emphasizes Dodge’s performance-car history. (Hash marks give us the same feeling.) Use of the new logo will be limited to Dodge websites, marketing, and merchandise. The two red stripes won’t appear on Dodge dealerships or vehicles.

The new logo also comes at a time of transition for Chrysler. Last week, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that much of its lineup across Chrysler's four brands would be revamped.

The twin red graphic stripes will be used in communications, advertising, internet and merchandising. They will not appear on Dodge products or on the dealership signage.

Cosworth has finally, and officially, revealed the limited edition Cosworth Impreza STI CS400. Set to go on sale in this June in the UK only and in a limited-run of just 75 units, the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 promises to bring supercar-like performance figures to the hot hatch segment.

The Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 comes with some serious kit. The output of the turbo 2.5-liter boxer engine has been increased to 400 PS (295 kW) at 5,750 rpm and 542 Nm (400 lb.ft) at 3,950 rpm.
The company says the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 can rocket from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds, however, they don't specify its top speed. They only say its limited to 155 mph. We guess its over the 155 mph the standard car is able to do.

A look at the styling changes reveals a new front bumper, mesh grille, foglights and a new rear spoiler. Wheels are a set of new 18-inch alloys. Exterior paintwork comes in a choice of silver, dark grey or red. The interior features new Recaro front seats, a piano black centre console and privacy glass.

Pricing starts at £49,995 (US$71,700/ €58,300).

The new Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is the result of one of the most eagerly anticipated automotive collaborations in recent times. The first genuine Cosworth-developed road car since 1996, the latest limited edition Impreza offers performance-car fans the thrill of a lifetime combined with exclusivity – production will be restricted to 75 cars.

The Cosworth-tuned, turbocharged vehicle is one of the world’s most accelerative hatchbacks. The renowned 2.5-litre turbocharged ‘Boxer’ engine is transformed to produce 33 per cent more power, drawing heavily on Cosworth’s extensive Formula 1 experience. The engine, which drives all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox, boasts an impressive 400 ps and the new model reaches 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds, going on to cover a quarter mile in 12.75 seconds at a terminal speed of 107 mph. Top speed is limited to 155mph.

The Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 features an extensive range of Cosworth-engineered components in the engine, turbo system, exhaust, suspension, brakes and wheels, plus subtle improvements to the exterior and interior styling to create a truly distinctive high performance car with everyday hatchback practicality.

Marketed exclusively in the UK in right-hand drive form, the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is available in a choice of three exterior colors (Spark Silver, Dark Grey and San Remo Red), and is priced from £49,995 on-the-road.

Engine delivers a 33 per cent power hike

At the heart of the new Cosworth Impreza is a heavily revised version of the marque’s famous horizontally-opposed, all-aluminium Boxer engine. The ‘flat-four’ power unit is removed from the car, hand finished, and several internal and ancillary components are replaced with up-rated items, specified by Cosworth.

As with all Impreza ‘Boxer’ engines, the STI Cosworth unit features twin overhead camshafts per cylinder bank (DOHC) plus an Active Valve Control System (AVCS) to deliver variable valve timing and enhance low-speed pulling power.

The focus of the Cosworth engine upgrade was to keep the enhancements simple, efficient and as close as possible to the original equipment design to guarantee reliability and easy maintenance at regular Subaru dealerships.

Internal upgrades include high-performance pistons, which are manufactured using the same methods as those employed to create Cosworth’s Formula 1 pistons. Special features reduce carbon build-up, minimise friction and reduce weight.

Forged connecting rods are made from high-strength 4340 (EN24) steel and the special Cosworth engine bearings boast a unique combination of design, metallurgy and engineering. Heavy duty cylinder head studs, high-performance multi layered head gaskets and a higher-pressure oil pump are also fitted.

The overall result is a huge increase in torque higher up the rev range, and significantly improved in-gear acceleration. This not only makes the Impreza more tractable for day-to-day road use, but also a far sharper tool on the race track.

New turbocharger and ‘breathe easy’ exhaust systems

An all-new Cosworth turbocharging system features a new compressor design and wastegate actuator to supply up-rated boost pressure and deliver increased power.

A unique exhaust system was developed to allow the engine to ‘breathe’ more easily and unleash its full potential. Larger capacity tubular manifolds and increased diameter downpipes speed up the evacuation of hot gases. The first catalyst is a non-restrictive design and larger tail pipes give the exhaust note a unique tone.

After the in-depth Cosworth performance upgrade which includes an ECU re-map, the boxer engine in the CS400 generates 33 per cent more power (400 ps at 5,750 rpm, compared with 300 ps at 6,000 rpm for the standard Impreza WRX STI), and 542 Nm of torque, while remaining within the torque capacity design limits of the original Impreza drivetrain.

Manual transmission and All-Wheel Drive system

To handle the increased power of the Cosworth-tuned engine, the Impreza STI’s six-speed manual transmission has carbon synchromesh applied to the top three ratios and a short throw linkage for quicker shifting.

There is also an upgraded single-plate clutch with a revised pressure plate, bearing and disc. The gearbox and final drive ratios are unchanged.

The Cosworth Impreza’s full-time All-Wheel-Drive transmission with front and rear limited-slip differentials, features a 50/50 front to rear torque split as the default, however, the torque split is varied electronically according to changing conditions. The multi-mode Driver Control centre differential with viscous coupling senses which axle has the better grip and varies the split ratio in milliseconds to distribute torque accordingly, thus maximising traction and minimising the possibility of wheelspin.

Fine-tuned suspension

Improving the Cosworth Impreza’s handling, steering feel and driver feedback – without compromising ride comfort – was a primary target for the development team.

Retaining Subaru’s original suspension layout and major components, Cosworth and a team of chassis engineers collaborated with Bilstein and Eibach technicians to tailor a ride/handling/steering package that was ideally matched to the new model’s increased performance.

Special Eibach coil springs and new Bilstein inserts, featuring unique damping characteristics, were manufactured to Cosworth’s specifications. The ride height was lowered by 10 mm at the front.

The benefits of this fettling are twofold. Firstly, there is a big improvement in ride quality generally, making the Impreza easier to live with on a day-to-day basis. Secondly, its on-the-limit behaviour is more focused and composed. The damping upgrades mean that there is less pitch and roll when turning into corners, meaning that keen drivers can get back on the power earlier and make the most of the car’s Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system.

Upgraded ‘racing’ brakes enhance stopping power

To match the new Impreza Cosworth’s supercar pace, Cosworth commissioned AP Racing to develop more powerful front brakes. Larger diameter (355 mm) ventilated front discs were adopted, with motorsport-style six-pot callipers featuring bespoke pistons operating on larger brake pads.

The difference in performance is immediately noticeable. The harder pads help to minimise fade, meaning that drivers can count on the AP stoppers for effective retardation time and time again.

The standard Impreza WRX STI’s rear brake discs, overall brake balance and original ABS system have been retained.

‘Stand-out’ looks, plus new style wheels

The outstanding performance of the Cosworth Impreza is reflected in its ‘stand-out’ appearance and standard Xenon headlamps. The lowered ride height and wider track give the car a whole new stance which is reinforced by a new shape front bumper, new fog lights, upper and lower mesh grilles and a new rear spoiler.

Discreet Cosworth badging is carried on the lower grille, front seats, brake callipers and floor mats. Individually numbered plaques are fitted on the engine and door sills. Each Cosworth Impreza STI CS400 is supplied with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Although the new model’s alloy wheels are a similar overall size to those of the regular Impreza WRX STI model – 18 x 8.5 inch – they are lighter and stronger. Called ‘Pro Race’ and finished in anthracite the latest wheels from the Team Dynamics range were selected as compatible with the Subaru’s five-stud design. These wheels have a 43 mm offset (the standard STI wheel’s offset is 55 mm) and extend the track by 12 mm – improving handling and filling the car’s wheel arches more effectively for a more aggressive stance.

The new wheels are fitted with high performance, low profile Michelin SP3 tyres chosen for their dry- and wet-road grip, durability, and low noise levels. Tyre size is 245/40 R18 and the tread pattern is directional.

Interior modifications and generous premium equipment

Inside, the sporty new Recaro front seats, the rear seats and steering wheel are all re-trimmed in Cosworth-branded black leather. Also distinguishing the CS400 are Piano Black centre stack and trim accents, and the fitment of privacy glass.

Standard features carried-over from the WRX STI model include: LED (light-emitting diode) tail lamps, front and rear electric windows, 10-speaker, six-disc radio/CD player, satellite navigation, Smart-entry and push-button start, plus front, side and curtain airbags.

The McLaren F1 turns 25 years old as it was launched back in 1988. 25 years later, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest normally aspirated production road car in the world and one of the most expensive cars ever built.

Over the course of four years, McLaren produced 64 F1, five F1 LM and three F1 GT road cars, along with 28 F1 GTR racers and six test prototypes. At the end of its lifespan in 1998, the F1 became the world's fastest production car, and while that title is now reserved for the almighty Bugatti Veyron, the McLaren still holds the record for fastest naturally aspirated road car. (Tricky, tricky!) Beyond that, the F1 garnered a healthy amount of respect for dominating Le Mans – these cars took first, third, fourth, fifth and thirteenth place at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as winning that year's GT1 championship.


Taking cues from its F1 endeavors, the McLaren F1 road car utilizes a carbon-fiber shell that weighs just 220 pounds yet offers impressive rigidity. A BMW-sourced 6.1-liter V-12 puts out 627 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque, lofty numbers even by 2010 standards, while a 2500-pound curb weight, ABS-less brakes, and a finely honed double-wishbone suspension kept drivers tuned to the road. Famously, the F1 had a central seating position, which led to the addition of two passenger seats for a three-seat configuration.

The McLaren F1 is powered by a 6064 cc BMW V12 engine developing between 600 and 680 hp. The most powerful version was the McLaren F1 LM Roadcar which had an output of 680 hp and was built in only 5 units during 1996.

The price of a McLaren F1 at the launch was a staggering 540,000 GBP. At that time it was the most expensive car in the world. Another first for the McLaren F1 was that it was the first production road car to feature a full carbon fiber monocoque chassis.

In 1988, McLaren took the decision to expand from Formula One and design and build "the finest sports car the world had ever seen". In March 1990 the team that was to create the F1 came together for the first time. In its 20th anniversary year, the McLaren F1 is considered by most people to be one of the greatest cars of all time. Its exclusivity, technical innovation, racing provenance, revolutionary packaging and extraordinary driving experience have made it an icon.

Just two years later, the McLaren F1 road car was launched to the world on 28th May 1992 in Monaco, with the first production car delivered to its proud owner in December 1993.

The F1 defines the McLaren road car DNA

McLaren is a carbon pioneer. The McLaren Formula 1 team was the first team in Formula 1 to use a carbon fibre chassis in 1981. Nine years on, these Formula 1 techniques were developed to create the carbon monocoque for the McLaren F1: the resulting structure weighed just 100kg whilst offering the highest levels of strength and safety. The bare carbon fibre passenger doors weighed just 7 kg each (which included the weight of the side intrusion beam).

The F1 defined the McLaren road car DNA: low weight, low polar moment of inertia, clever packaging, superb quality and innovative design, resulting in an outstanding driving experience.

The F1 bristles with innovative design. The central driving position, which ensures superb visibility and no compromise on control positions for the driver; the pannier side lockers providing unprecedented levels of luggage capacity in a car of this type; the patented suspension system to provide both control and ride quality.

The F1 was launched at a price of £540,000 in 1994, and over the course of the next four years 64 F1, 5 F1 LM and 3 F1 GT road cars were produced, together with 28 F1 GTR race cars. An additional six prototypes were produced.

In October 2008, a delivery mileage F1 was sold at auction for £2.53 million, underlining the F1's status as one of the great motoring icons.

Taking a road car to the track

In 1994, after pressure from owners, McLaren developed a racing version of the F1 road car to run in the FIA GT1 category in the 1995 season. Despite a design and development period of just 3 months, the F1 GTR swept all before it, winning not only the 1995 GT1 Championship, but also the 24 Heures du Mans on its debut. McLaren not only won, but dominated the rain-soaked endurance race, finishing in 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th places.

The Le Mans winning F1 GTR was piloted by J.J. Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya. Lehto's performance through the night on a treacherous circuit has been hailed as one of the great racing performances of all time, taking up to 10 seconds a lap off the cars in front of him. The winning car is proudly displayed at the McLaren Technology Centre in exactly the condition that it finished Le Mans in 1995.

Thus the F1 GTR secured for McLaren a unique position in motor racing history, as the only manufacturer to win the Formula 1 World Championship, the Indianapolis 500 and the Le Mans 24 Hours.

McLaren decided to celebrate the extraordinary result at Le Mans by creating 5 F1 LM road cars, one for each F1 that finished this most grueling of races. Launched in McLaren Orange, as used on Bruce McLaren's race cars the 1960s and 70s, and with a derestricted race engine, the LM is not only the most powerful of all F1 variants, but also the most valuable. Formula 1 fans will recognize this as the car which Lewis Hamilton has set his heart on owning.

In 1997, the final iteration of the F1 road car project was built. The F1 GT was built solely to fulfil the new homologation rules for the 1997 GTR race car, of which 10 examples were produced in the same year. Both the GT road car and the 1997 GTR race cars became known as the 'Longtail', because of the longer front and rear overhangs for improved downforce when racing. Although McLaren only had to build one car for homologation purposes, two more were built following requests from existing F1 owners.

In 1998, with a total of 106 of all variants built and its production run complete, the McLaren F1 went on to achieve its greatest feat outside competitive motorsport. McLaren development and race driver Andy Wallace took XP5, the fifth and final prototype F1 with some 45,000 hard test miles on the clock, to the Ehra-Lessien proving ground in Germany. It was here on 31st March 1998 that the howling V12 propelled him to an amazing 240.1mph. Over 12 years later, this remains a world record for a naturally aspirated production car.

Back to the F1 future

On 27th April 2010, McLaren Automotive celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the start of the F1 programme by inviting F1 owners past and present to a celebration dinner at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. The following day, after an insight into McLaren Automotive's exciting plans for a future range of high performance sports cars, the owners were treated to a display of 21 McLaren F1 road and race cars, the largest number of F1 cars ever assembled in one place.

With the launch of McLaren Automotive as a new car company announced in March 2010, the company begins production planning for an entire range of high performance sports, designed and built in-house by McLaren. The first in this range will be the MP4-12C.

The 12C shares much of the design philosophy that was applied to the McLaren F1. Starting with the new car's MonoCell, a one-piece carbon fibre chassis that is stiff, light and ensures occupant safety, every component has been designed to ensure the car is lightweight, nimble and able to deliver ultimate performance. When the 12C launches in 2011, it will be the first in the 'core' sports car sector to offer a carbon chassis, and the first road car ever with a one-piece, moulded carbon chassis.

From the outset, the 12C has been 'designed around the driver'. Outstanding aerodynamic efficiency and bespoke technologies including Proactive Chassis Control, Seamless Shift dual-clutch Gearbox (SSG), Brake Steer and the 12C's unique Airbrake feature in a car which has been developed using Formula 1 simulator technology. The new high performance sports car from McLaren will be sold initially through 35 retailers in 19 different countries around the world from Spring 2011.

McLaren's celebration of the 20th anniversary of the F1 will continue throughout the year.

McLaren enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see both the F1 and 12C together at this summer's Goodwood Festival of Speed, which takes place at the famous English motorsport venue from 2-4 July 2010.

Unichip has boosted performance on the Toyota Hilux 3.0-litre D4D 4x4 version thanks to a 'U-connect' plug and play Uni-Q upgrade.

The Unichip Toyota Hilux power kit for the D4D 3.0-litre version of the seventh generation of the pick-up. Just when you though no one cares about giving more power to a pick-up truck, the Unichip Toyota Hilux offers 29bhp and 40lb.ft of extra juice for all your daily needs. The extra horses of the Unichip Toyota Hilux kit come from a Uni-Q piggyback ECU that takes the output of the car to 184 bhp at 3500 rpm and 295 lb.ft of torque at 3000rpm.

Weitec has modified the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The upgraded Golf will include new F springs, a sport system ULTRA GT kit and new coilovers. There are is a lowered ride height by 10 to 40 millimetres.

As far as suspension, customers can choose from: the first and the cheapest involves new sports springs that bring the WEITEC VW Golf VI GTI 20 mm closer to the ground and costs 179 Euro. The second option is the company's ULTRA GT set that uses stronger springs that are priced at 525 Euro and which enable sporty driving.
