MORE: Conceived by Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata group, the Tata Nano is intended as an all-weather form of personal transportation that provides a safer and cleaner alternative to the two-wheeler scooters that are pervasive in India. Unveiled last year in India by Tata Motors, India's largest automobile manufacturer, the Tata Nano is targeted to families who had not previously been able to afford a car. Billed as "the people's car," the base model starts at $2,200 in India and can accommodate up to five adults.

Tata Technologies contributed to 18 patents on the Nano and was involved from concept to launch, including work on the concept, advanced engineering, body-in-white, interior, exterior and manufacturing processes. The model to be on display in Detroit is an Indian specification model on loan from Tata Technologies' Center for Advanced Engineering and Design in Pune, India.

"The innovative thinking that brought the Tata Nano to market is symbolic of what Tata Technologies has to offer the automotive industry," said Warren Harris, Tata Technologies' President and COO. "Tata Technologies was front-and-center in engineering and developing the Nano; working closely with Tata Motors and with a significant number of the Nano project suppliers."

New Delhi 2010: Tata Magic Iris

发表者 ddgg 1/7/10

NEW DELHI — As India revs up its burgeoning car market, Tata has unveiled the Magic Iris at the 2010 New Delhi Auto Show, The Tata Magic Iris seats five, including the driver, and is meant to compete with three-wheeled vehicles.

[Tata-MAGIC-IRIS-1.jpg]

The Magic Iris uses a 611-cc water-cooled diesel engine capable of launching the car to a massive top speed of 55 km/h.  The 11.2-horsepower engine provides better acceleration than most of the country's trikes, and requires less overall maintenance.

The Magic Iris, which is expected to go on sale in India later this year, is powered by a 0.6-liter water-cooled diesel engine producing 11.3-horsepower that allows the vehicle reach speeds of up to 55km/h or 34mph.

Tata's official statement on the Magic Iris did not mention pricing, but observers here expect it to come in at under $2,000. The Indian automaker said the Magic Iris will be launched later this year, "offering safer and more comfortable mobility for those who depend on three-wheelers."

Its unique design and construction ensures that it is as robust as it is elegant and comfortable. Its 2.2 Litre Direct Injection Common Rail (DICOR) diesel engine, delivering 140 PS power and 320 Nm torque, is mated, in the 4x4 option, with an all-wheel drive with torque on demand, which senses and distributes torque to the wheels in accordance with the terrain. Dual mass flywheel reduces NVH to the bare minimum level.

It's a little difficult to keep track of what's happening at Tata and JLR these days. While the XF sales continue apace and the XJ is promising, the JLR division lost £673.4 million pounds ($1.11B U.S.) last year, and parent company Tata was $520 million in the red at the end of its 2008 fiscal year. Due to those numbers and a so-far unfulfilled quest for financing, Tata has been relentlessly talking up the need to shed production workers.

NEW DELHI, April 9 -- The much-awaited bookings for the world's cheapest car Nano which worth 2,000 U.S. dollars starts Thursday across India for a limited period of 17 days, local media reported.

Tata Motors states to accept application forms of 300 rupees (6 U.S. dollars) each for the 624-cc jelly-bean shaped Nano and a booking amount ranges between 2,850 rupees (57 U.S. dollars) and 4,110 rupees (82.2 U.S. dollars) among different banks.

Online booking for the Nano, the first such option in India, are also available with cost of 200 rupees (4 U.S. dollars)

Tata Motors itself has sold over 75,000 booking forms from its 218 outlets across the country so far while booking agent State Band of India has distributed hundreds of thousands of applications only a day after Nano's commercial launch on March 23.

Ravi Bhattacharya, sales manager of auto dealer Autolink Delhi said that ever since the car was commercially launched, his outlets received at least 100-200 unique inquiries daily. His firm has decided to deploy additional sales-people to handle the expected rush for the bookings.

Other dealers say almost half the customers visiting their showrooms to check out the Nano are buying forms, with most of the inquiries related to the top-end variant.

According to Tata Motors, waiting time for the high end with power windows and air conditioning priced at less than 3,000 U.S. dollars could be shorter, since the company will make more of these cars than the 2,000 U.S. dollar base version.

A total of 20 billion rupees (400 million U.S. dollar) has been invested into the Nano project with five years of research and development. But the company, which had to shift its upcoming Nano factory last October after some protests over farmland acquired for the project, has earmarked just 100,000 vehicles for the first phase.

Now that Tata Motors has firmed up a deal with Ford to acquire Land Rover and Jaguar, the Indian company can set their eyes on the future. With Ford agreeing to supply the two brands for the next quarter, Tata can work a little more on long term planning for the two new brands without sacrificing efforts to become ready for their acquisitions.

AutoWeek has published a timeline for the two companies through 2016. We begin first with 2009, where it looks like the Jaguar XFR and XKR will continue on, as planned, with a new 5.0-liter V8. The direct-injection petrol engine will be available with a supercharger, getting up to 500 horsepower. 380 hp for the naturally aspirated engine. Meanwhile, over at Land Rover, the updated Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will also get the new V8s from Jaguar. Both Range Rovers will get a bit of an overhaul inside, with new instruments and trim.

2010 should see the entrance of an updated Jaguar XJ, as the X-Type gets put to pasture. Keeping its elite status feel, the XJ will give driver and passengers a bit more room inside. The X-Type, which never quite got the fan base Jaguar expected, will likely go away as the new decade begins. A facelift is also coming to the Land Rover LR3, with an updated interior being included. Upgrades will include a new console and instrument panel. The previously mentioned naturally-aspirated 380 hp V8 will likely be found on this SUV.

A production version of the Land Rover LRX concept should become the sixth model in Land Rover's 2011 lineup. Meant to compete against the MINI Cooper and Audi TT, the diminutive three-door could be a home run for Tata if the current supermini consumers decide they need a slightly bigger vehicle.

Aiming for a $50,000 price point, the production version of the two-seat Jaguar F-Type concept could see its debut in 2012. With Tata at the helm, it would not be surprising to see this car fast tracked and possibly released in 2011. We also would not be surprised to see a new concept or prototype of this car in 2010. 2012 may aso see a seven-seat version of the Land Rover LRX, but meant to keep a bit of sex appeal.

Five years fron now, we would like to see the Jaguar XF Coupe. This could come in 2013, but Tata could also red light the project. At Ford-owned Jaguar, the car was based more on the C-XF concept as a short hardtop. A brand new Range Rover is due out in 2013. Expected to be larger but sportier, design of a new Range Rover could still be modified by the new owners. AutoWeek seems to think a $200,000 Range Rover with alloy body and hybrid powertrain is not unlikely.

The all-new Jaguar XF should show up in 2014 with an alloy body. An all-new Range Rover Sport will likely appear this year as well, but with an aluminum body. Land Rover may introduce the all-new Land Rover Defender this year as well, with Tata planning on putting forth a simple 4x4 for developing markets. Tata could also create a similar 4x4 under the Tata moniker, and share platforms.

Over the 2015-2016 two-year period, Tata should bring us an all-new Jaguar XJ to replace 2010's facelifted the Jaguar XJ. An all-new Land Rover LR3 may come out this year as well.

According to a report from Reuters, Ford Motor Company has agreed to sell its luxury brands Jaguar and Land Rover to India's Tata Motors for more than $2 billion. Although the deal was reportedly signed today (Tuesday, March 25, 2008), sources state that FoMoCo plans to publicly announce the transaction which will also see it pay approximately 300 million pounds ($597.7 million) into the European units' pension fund, in New York on Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. EDT.

Ford sells Jaguar, Land Rover?

发表者 ddgg 3/26/08

Although there hasn’t been any official word from either Ford or Tata Motors, the Financial Times has already told the world that the sale of Jaguar and Land Rover by Ford to Tata has gone through. According to the news, the Indian conglomerate passed on a cool sum hovering around USD2 billion to Ford as compensation for giving up the two British-born brands. It is not expected that only cash will pass hands as this would be too hefty even for Tata.

Tata has been the key bidder in this whole process since Jag and LR were announced to be going on sale. Ford lost USD2.7 billion last year and has been in great danger of sinking into bankruptcy for over three years now. Selling the two luxury brands would inject some much-needed cash into its operations and possibly reverse a Titanic situation. Jag and LR were purchased by Ford in 1989 and 2000 respectively, the latter from BMW which was also disappearing fast no thanks to LR debt and bad product. Land Rover has come back with guns blazing in the past year and is now seen as a very attractive buy for anyone, while Jaguar is still redefining its space yet again with new product such as XF.
