8'08'': another record1 for Renault Sport at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with Megane R.S. Trophy

  • A time of 8'08"" has seen Mégane R.S. Trophy - the new limited edition version of Mégane Renault Sport - establish a new benchmark time for a production-specification front-wheel drive car at the Nürburgring's infamous Nordschleife. This performance beats the attempts of several far more powerful, rear-wheel drive cars.

  • Renault Sport -the sport brand of Renault- shows one more time what Renault know-how and enthusiasm mean. Today's achievement provides further evidence of the technological excellence that goes into the design of Renault models and of how motorsport-proven technical solutions are carried over to production cars, the chief beneficiaries being the brand's customers.

An exploit that has ‘shortened' the Nordschleife...

Renault Sport established its first lap record for a front-wheel drive production car at the Nordschleife on June 23, 2008. The time of 8m17s posted that day by Mégane R26.R. demonstrated that a showroom-specification front-wheel drive car could beat many models produced by some elite specialist brands and tuners. On June 17, 2011, it was the turn of Mégane R.S. Trophy - a new limited-edition version of Mégane R.S. - to beat the time by 9 seconds, a lap record that has stood for three years in the firm grasp of its predecessor.

Today's lap time is the fruit of an increase in power output to 265hp, along with careful set-up work and a tyre choice optimised by Renault Sport engineers. This limited edition version reveals the exceptional performance potential of Mégane R.S.

The latest achievement speaks volumes for Renault's ability to dial the expertise and experience it has forged in motorsport - including Formula 1 - into its production cars. Indeed, Mégane R.S. Trophy has benefited directly from all the domains in which Renault Sport excels, from design quality and exacting reliability, to painstakingly tuned engines, chassis and brakes.

Supercar performance... for a much wider audience of enthusiasts

The time posted at the Nürburgring puts Mégane R.S. on a par with an extremely prestigious list of supercars. Mégane R.S Trophy provides access to a level of performance which rivals that of exclusive cars with power outputs of up to and beyond 500hp.

Laurent Hurgon (development driver, Renault Sport):

"The Nordschleife is a legendary course. Its length and layout, which is very different to that of a conventional circuit, make it a unique and technically demanding challenge. Its difficulties are extremely varied, ranging from fast and even very fast in places to much twistier and slower portions. Turns like ‘Karusell' and ‘Pflanzgarten', for example, make huge demands of the car and driver alike, yet Mégane R.S. Trophy is very much in its element here and feels particularly reassuring despite the uncompromising nature of the terrain. The limited slip differential allowed me to accelerate hard out of the countless turns without understeer. The carefully-tuned Cup chassis, the dampers, the fade-resistant brakes, the Recaro seats, the power of the 195kW engine, the ready availability of torque between 2,500 and 5,000rpm and the car's Bridgestone RE 050A (235/35 R19) tyres allowed me to make the most of the car's enormous potential, especially into and out of the corners. It is this package which enabled me to post such a quick time round this circuit which you must always approach with a certain degree of humility."

RENAULT MÉGANE R.S. AND MOTORSPORT

Mégane is very active in both rallying and circuit racing. Designed for rallying, Mégane R.S. N4 stands out at once through its looks. Widely acclaimed for the quality of its chassis and engine, it is an ideal choice for privateer teams and drivers. Developed for tarmac competition, Mégane R.S. N4 is emerging as a new benchmark on sealed-surface events.

On track, Mégane Trophy V6 takes the lines of the production version a step further to combine carefully-honed aerodynamics and a remarkably elegant stance. It sets new standards in the world of ‘high performance' racing saloons. Designed and engineered solely for motorsport, this prototype delivers 360hp while tipping the scales at 980kg. It has become emblematic of the World Series by Renault and delivers unrivalled performance/driving pleasure package for its price and class.

Bridgestone RE050A: the record-beating tyre

The Bridgestone RE050A's rigid construction features two Rayon plies which transmit the forces generated by the contact patch to ensure responsive performance and impeccable stability.

The tread's ‘soft' high-grip compound was conceived for high-performance sporting cars and is capable of withstanding extremely high lateral and longitudinal forces.

The Potenza RE050A's asymmetric tread pattern takes its inspiration from the tyres developed by Bridgestone for Formula 1 which demands exceptional performance in both wet and dry conditions.

The pattern of the outer sides of the tread is derived from that employed in F1. Its extremely rigid properties deliver enhanced response and optimal handling. The rigid tread blocks favour outstanding road holding which is particularly appreciable when cornering.

The central, semi-slick circumferential band optimises the potential of Mégane R.S. Trophy's chassis, combining instant response from the front tyres and good rear-end directional control to facilitate entry into corners.
The central part of the tread takes its inspiration from the Potenza F1 rain tyre. Its carefully designed tread blocks clear water more quickly and more efficiently towards the main grooves to provide even greater grip in wet conditions and push back the aquaplaning threshold.

In addition to its sporting potential, the Potenza RE050A delivers a high standard of ride comfort and also packs Bridgestone-developed noise-reduction technology in accordance with the philosophy behind Mégane R.S. Trophy.

Aston Martin Zagato concept

Aston Martin revealed the result of its latest collaboration with Italian design house Zagato, a project built on the V12 Vantage platform that will be unveiled at the 2011 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, Italy’s premier collector-car event that starts up Saturday.

The new Aston Zagato endurance racer is powered by a 6.0-liter (5935 cc) all alloy quad overhead cam 48 valve engine, developing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque. With a front mid-mounted engine, rear wheel drive architecture, the Aston Martin V12 Zagato comes equipped with a six-speed automated manual gearbox, a Twin Plate competition clutch and a limited slip diff. The full specification of Aston's new V12 Zagato is available lower down this page.

Like that car, the Zagato V12 is planned to be sold in limited numbers, both in road-going form and as a race car--the latter of which is set to make its debut at the Nürburgring four-hour race where it will feature a more extreme aerodynamic package, including lightly modified bodywork, a stripped-out interior and a towering rear wing.

The racing debut of the V12 Zagato will be at the Nürburgring on May 28, with a view to racing two of the cars at the 24-hour race on June 25. The driver team will be led for the sixth year by chief executive Dr. Ulrich Bez.

Aston Martin unveils new V12 Zagato

  • In 50th anniversary year of the iconic DB4GT Zagato, Aston Martin introduces a modern interpretation of the famous Aston Martin and Zagato collaboration
  • New V12 Zagato concept to be premiered at the Villa D'Este Concours on 21st May to gauge customer interest
  • The V12 Zagato will appear in the form of an endurance race car to compete at the Nürburgring 24 hour race on 25/26 June; following tradition of recent new Aston Martins

Gaydon / Lake Como, 20 May 2011. Aston Martin will unveil the stunning new V12 Zagato endurance racer concept on the shores of Lake Como, Italy at the Villa D'Este Concours tomorrow.

Reviving a collaboration which has produced some of the most beautiful and sought-after cars in the world, the partnership takes inspiration from the past, to create a modern descendent of classics such as the DB4GT Zagato, V8 Vantage Zagato and DB7 Zagato based on Aston Martin's ultimate performance interpretation of the Vantage range: the V12 Vantage.

Dr Ulrich Bez, CEO of Aston Martin said: "The Zagato design language is a perfect complement to our design and engineering expertise. After 50 years of the two companies being associated with each other the partnership has produced some of the world's most iconic cars."

"Of course, fifty years ago Italian design houses were widely seen as leading the way with new designs but now and supported by our independency, Aston Martin has its own in-house design ability so this new venture with Zagato is more collaborative than it perhaps would have been in the past."

"The task for us has been to create a concept that is a natural successor to those iconic cars that have gone before. Matching the technology of the age with the traditional skills vital to deliver such a bespoke and exclusive sports car will lead to a strictly limited run of road going V12 Zagatos."

Work began in 2010 with initial meetings between Aston Martin and Zagato where sketches incorporating the design DNA of both companies were discussed and a decision was made to proceed with the project.

Director of Design, Marek Reichman added: "The Design team at Gaydon spent time refining the concept using a mixture of the latest computer based modelling techniques along with crafting traditional clay models to give a real world idea of proportion, stance and detail"

"The V12 Zagato is an elegant yet brutal design which reflects the great balance between race performance and pure Aston Martin style. The original DB4GT Zagato was a true icon, powerful and graceful; the new design is a true representation of the spirit of DB4GT Zagato. The muscular organic forms define the thoroughbred nature of the car's racing credentials."

Working alongside the initial design team was a dedicated group of Aston Martin engineers led by Chris Porritt - previously responsible for the engineering of the One-77. With the skills and knowledge gained from such specialised projects this team has worked to bring the unique design of the V12 Zagato to reality in a very short period of time.

Featuring a new handcrafted aluminium body, the V12 Zagato delivers a beautiful and muscular design not possible using pre-formed panel techniques. Using the influences and skill of nearly 100 years of heritage in the craft, every aluminium panel was formed using an English wheel and traditionally crafted body bucks. Each front wing alone comprises seven separate pieces of aluminium, combined and then hand finished to give one flowing form. Another iconic Zagato design cue is the double bubble roof created in this case from five separate pieces illustrating further the intensity of craftsmanship involved in the construction of the V12 Zagato.

Designed for the focused driver, the V12 Zagato has been honed with pure driving enjoyment in mind. The V12 Zagato combines Aston Martin's most dynamic bonded aluminium platform with the power of the 6.0-litre V12 engine producing 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS), and 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque.

The V12 Vantage which forms the basis of the V12 Zagato has been proven on the race track as early as 2009 with a class win in its debut race at the 24 hour race at Nürburgring whilst being close to production standard with only essential safety modifications, reduced weight and re-tuned suspension but no additional aerodynamic enhancements. In 2011 the car has gone on to form the basis of the new Aston Martin GT3 race car unveiled last month.

The first DB4GT Zagato shown to the public in late 1960 spent much of its life as a racing car after launch. Later perhaps the two most famous DB4GT Zagatos, registered ‘1 VEV' and ‘2 VEV' were raced with success by such names as Jim Clark and Roy Salvadori. The fascinating story of these cars and the nature of high performance and low weight which drove the Zagato projects gave the inspiration for the first two V12 Zagatos to be created as endurance race cars.

The racing debut of the V12 Zagato will be at the four hour VLN race at Nürburgring on 28th May with a view to two cars racing at the 24 hour race on 25/26 June. The cars will be driven by a team with great experience of Aston Martin race cars, led for the sixth year by Chief Executive Dr. Ulrich Bez.

Both cars follow Aston Martin's philosophy of racing in close-to-production form but with full FIA safety compliance. V12 Vantage Zagato specification includes a bonded aluminium platform modified with a bespoke steel roll cage, front and rear double wishbone suspension with fully adjustable Multimatic DSSV Dampers and a 120ltr endurance racing fuel tank.

The Aston Martin V12 Zagato will be shown for the first time at the Villa D'Este Concours on Saturday 21st May 2011

Episode 1000 of Fast Lane Daily, the longest running and most popular internet based automotive newscast. For episode 1000, Executive Producer Emil Rensing challenges Derek DeAngelis and the team to fly to Germany and drive the Nurburgring for under $1000. Is it possible? Does Derek crash? Does he complete a lap for under $1000? Find out on Episode 1000. No, it might not be an episode worthy of Top Gear, Derek may have listened to Justin Bieber on his iPod instead of Lil Wayne, but let's face it: Anytime you get to drive a track...

Press Release

In 2004 Russell Datz, Fred Seibert and I produced an interstitial car news minute for the newly launched Spike TV called "Zero to Sixty". Albie Hecht, the then president of Spike introduced us to a then unknown Danica Patrick -- and I learned my first lesson about producing TV: Place your bets early and invest boldly in talent. Alan Goodman, who directed our first shoots and crafted our first scripts taught me my second lesson about producing TV: Always wear a sport-coat so no one on the crew asks you to lift anything heavy.

Zero to Sixty Episode 1: http://bit.ly/eV2rxM

Rory Camangian sold 3 sponsors in the first 2 weeks: Valvoline, Castrol and Electronic Arts, but sadly we didn't last long on Spike. The concept of short-form programming didn't work well on the television, even though it was very slowly becoming all the rage with us nerds on the Internet... But that was just a fad, right?

About a year later, Fred and I were hot-to-trot on video podcasting and launched Channel Frederator and VOD Cars in the iTunes Podcast Directory -- before iTunes supported video podcasting or Apple had an iPod that played video. I put up the first episode of VOD Cars late one night in August of 2005. I cut together the episode on a stolen copy of FinalCut Pro with some footage shot by Rob Ferretti. (That cop may be yelling at me. His name was Dave, by the way and he was a very nice man.) I even put a commercial in there -- to teach my audience from day 1 that this was television-like and about making money. (God bless you, Trunk Monkey!)

VOD Cars Episode 1: http://bit.ly/ghMAdK

Fred did similarly with Channel Frederator -- and even David Karp wanted to follow-suit with a Kung-Fu podcast but he was too busy with something called Tumblr.

Pete Alcorn from Apple featured our unique brand of 320 x 240 pixel video mayhem in the iTunes Podcast Directory. About a week later, I looked at my download numbers from pair.com who was hosting vodcars.com and, well, by the time the month was over, I owed them almost $20,000.00 in bandwidth charges. I recall having a great conversation with my now ex-wife trying to explain the situation: "You raced around like a lunatic with your friends in a Ferrari you shouldn't have bought, video taped it, put it on the Internet and then paid more money than you have to let people watch it?"

Well, when you say it that way... (To her credit, she was always supportive of my insanity.)

For a brief time, vodcars.com was a directory of car videos on the Internet. Mike Glenn assembled a TON of those links from places like StreetFire.net, CarVids.com, RacingFlix.com and helped build those pages. Traffic soared -- proportional to the bills.

Then YouTube came along and killed it all slowly but brilliantly with a much better, much more robust, much more consumer friendly video sharing service. Podcasting became second fiddle to web video when Flash won the format war thanks to YouTube.

But that was ok: It meant that someone else believed what Fred and I believed.

Fred and I wrangled a team together: Tim Shey, Herb Scannell, and Jed Simmons. We somehow convinced Spark, Saban, and Balderton to believe that television on the Internet was the next big thing of the moment -- even after I told one of our VC partners, in our very first meeting, "fuck you" and essentially threw them out of our offices. (What? At least I'm consistent!) Next New Networks was born from our collective vision as creative, venture, development, production, programming, and management professionals. We started down the car road, among several other categories we still believe in to this day. "If you want to own a category, you want to own the news." Herb's words ring in my ears.

A daily car news show, shot in a studio every day, fashioned after Zero to Sixty... It made a lot of sense. We couldn't and didn't want to compete with Autoblog, World Car Fans or Jalopnik. We wanted to add something new to the community. How could we do something fresh, unique, and very different? How could we be the low cost provider of a great video news program? How could we be quality without being expensive?

Fast Lane Daily was born and became the cornerstone of our fledgeling internet-tv-automotive-video-media-empire. Garage 419, Global Motor Spies, VOD Cars, Bikini Model Driving School, Shakedown, FLDetours... Great programming with folks like Derek D., Matt Farah, Gene Sanchez, Alex Gizela, Tina Beth Pina, Ji Young Min, Andrea Feczko, Carrie Millbank and countless others who made it all go... We had lots of traffic, lots of audience, lots of fun for the next few years. We brought our audiences places they never saw before. All that cool stuff car companies do that you didn't get to see? We showed it to you. All those cool videos from races, events, test days, factories, shops, and tracks? We had them just for you. Videos shot by the community of cool stuff caught on camera they wanted to share with the world? They gave it to us and we helped make them famous. Slowly but surely the industry saw what we could do for them.

Fast Lane Daily Episode 1: http://bit.ly/gOsWfm

A few years ago, I remember the launch of the Ford Mustang Bullitt in San Francisco. Ford staged an impressive "reveal" and posted the video on YouTube. Overnight they did almost 50 views and they were stoked! Mike Spinelli filed a report on the road during the drive and our version did about 5,000 in the same period of time. The consistency of delivery and the relationship with our audience made our channel valuable -- and folks began to see that and understand and seek out our help in getting their message out with powerful video as opposed to just a press release, photo, and a few words.

It was working!

The one thing we didn't have was a lot of ads... and with the down turn in Detroit things got even worse and automotive media fell by the way side across the board.

In November of 2009, Fast Lane Daily and Next New Networks changed their relationship. Fast Lane Daily joined the "Next New Creators Program" and I began funding the production of Fast Lane Daily, Shakedown, and FLDetours and shuttering Garage 419, VOD Cars, and most tragically Bikini Model Driving School (sorry, girls). The economic mess is a temporary condition. I worked very hard to get us where we were. I worked hard to get folks like JF Musial, Leo Parente, Alan Kaufman, Mike Spinelli, Kenny Herman, Ian Jenkins, Tom Albrecht, Donny Nordlicht, Tom Morningstar, Matt Farah and Derek D. on the team and I wasn't going to let them go lightly. While some folks went their own way, some of the shows went "off the air", some folks went to work wirth friends, and some folks went to work for me in other capacities. New people joined our team like Josh, Richard, and new Iain. We even got Alex Roy to come to the party regularly! Tangent Vector was born from the vision of JF and Christian -- and he, Leo, and Derek never gave up hope and basically forced me to keep making Fast Lane Daily because none of them wanted to get full-time day jobs.

We changed what we do. We changed how we did it. We "fired" Derek. Got Leo on-camera and writing more often -- and are back better than ever with a new tone, a new show, a new feel and a new Derek. It's more fun. It's more conversational and more intimate -- and it's working better than ever. November 2010 was our best month ever, up until December whch is looking like it'll set the bar again as our biggest month yet! Automotive media is no longer a "dirty word". BBC's TopGear USA is on fire (say what you will, it's doing very well for History) and rumour has it that Speed TV is trying to get in on the mix with a new pilot starring a former Internet star who all us car nerds know and love. Video on the Internet is becoming more and more of a preferred medium for advertisers and Fast Lane Daily continues to forge great bonds with our ever increasing audience and folks building new technologies like Autostream (but more on that some other day.)

So, as you watch Derek's journey in Fast Lane Daily episode 1,000 to the automotive nirvana that is the Nurburgring... and as you watch him drive the world-famous Green Hell in a rented Citröen C4 "Picasso" mini-van... and as you laugh at the part where he can't pump his own gas because he's from New Jersey... keep in mind that we made this happen on a budget less than the catering service on a television studio shoot.

We do this because you love it. We do this because we love it. And we do this because we love that you love to love what we love to love to do.

And that's how we got to episode 1,000.

Lexus has released a special Nurburgring version of the LFA Supercar.

The package is limited to 50 units worldwide of the total 500-unit production run. Only 150 LFAs are designated for America, so simple math would suggest only 15 or so will have the option package.

The special edition comes in four colors: whitest white, orange, black and matte black, with the matte paint job costing an additional $20,000. There are also three interior colors: black, red and violet.

Engine wise the enhancements include a modified version of the 4.8-litre V10 engine with 562-horsepower, or only 10-horsepower more. Gear-shift time will be reduced to 0.15 seconds — a 0.05 second decrease.

According to the automaker, the LFA Nürburgring Package will cost US$70,000 (MSRP) on top of the US$375,000 (€295,300) potential customers are expected to part with. A matt black exterior can be had for an extra US$20,000.

Walter Röhrl with Porsche GT3 RS - 17.12.2009

Stuttgart. Porsche ambassador and test driver - and double world rally champion - Walter Röhrl (62) will compete in the Nürburgring 24 hour race in May 2010 in a standard new Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It will also mark Röhrl's return to Germany's largest automobile race since last competing in 1993.

From 1993 to date, Röhrl has conducted tests in every standard Porsche vehicle on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. "Right from the word go, the new 911 GT3 RS reminded me of a race vehicle," says Röhrl. "No other road-going 911 has ever been as close to a race car as this current GT3 RS. That's why I'm thrilled to be able to prove that this sports car is up to the challenge of the 24 hour race."

Walter Röhrl with Porsche GT3 RS - 17.12.2009

The new Porsche 911 GT RS is powered by a 450 hp, 3.8-litre, six-cylinder boxer engine. The high-revving unit reaches a specific output of over 118 hp per litre. Developed in the motorsport department at Weissach, the 911 GT3 RS is fitted with a particularly short transmission ratio for racing purposes as a standard feature. The dynamic engine mounts featured as standard contribute to improved driving dynamics. Depending on the driving situation, the mounts change in their stiffness and damping effect, improving the connection between the engine and body when driving under racing conditions. The aerodynamics is consequently designed for downforce - another forte for track racing.

Walter Röhrl with Porsche GT3 RS - 17.12.2009

"In the last years, Porsche racing vehicles have performed brilliantly at the 24 hour race on the Nürburgring with their speed and extraordinary reliability," says Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. "Four times straight, it was the Porsche GT3 RSR that was the vehicle to dominate the overall classification. I'm very pleased to see one of our Weissach-developed road-going vehicles competing parallel to the thoroughbred racers and proving its suitability for long distance competition."

The 38th running of the Nürburgring 24 hour race takes place on 15-16 May 2010. Every year, this event attracts far more than 200,000 spectators to the Nordschleife.
Source:Porsche

Evo magazine is reporting the newly facelifted 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS has unofficially lapped Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7min 33sec. That's still significantly slower than the current leaders, which include the Corvette ZR1 (7m26.4s), Gumpert Apollo (7m11.57s), Radical SR8LM (6m48s) and the highly disputed Nissan GT-R (7m27.56s), however, compared to the regular 911 GT3 it is a full seven seconds quicker.

There's one question I'd like answered though - what's the longevity of these road cars at such insane speeds. I mean, how many laps can a 1740kg GTR do sub-7m30s before the brakes melt and the tyres go pop? Likewise the 'Vette. I reckon we should push for a 4-lap challenge from now on. Were it possible, I reckon the Porsche might just get the job done.

It was a year ago Porsche disputed Nissan's claims of achieving 7m 29s with the newly launched Nissan GT-R which was 20 kilos heavier than the 911 Turbo. Porsche officials were baffled as they could only achieve 7m 54s with a GT-R they purchased from the US. Porsche suspected the GT-R had been modified or used other tires. Nissan fired back by releasing photos of the tires used as well as in-car video footage with timer display. Since then Nissan has gone on to better the GT-R's time further with 7m 26.7s.

BMW M5 F10 spy photos on Nurburgring

Spies have captured more images of the upcoming BMW M5 (F10) revealing further design details. Last week the M5 showed its front end design. Now these latest photos give a partial view of the rear taillights with an LED design which looks similar to the 5 Series GT. Previous prototypes incorporated a cylindrical taillight lense which looked like something out of Flash Gordon.

BMW M5 F10 spy photos on Nurburgring

It seems the M5 will lose its 373kW (507hp) naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 in favor of a lighter, more economical twin turbo V8 engine found in the X5 M and X6 M making 408kW (555hp). However, latest speculation places power output even higher - between 420kW (571hp) and 450kW (612hp). An 8-speed sequential gearbox has been mentioned as a possible powertrain mate.

The four extended tailpipes are ever-present and confirm BMW's long-standing approach to all its M cars. Exterior mirrors are standard issue but will likely take on a different shape for the final production model. The other items appearing again are the power dome on the bonnet and cross-drilled brake disks all around.

Formula One derived Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) technology will make its way into the M5 not only as a way to boost power but also to make it eco-friendlier. The M5 based on the next-generation 5 Series goes on sale in 2011.

These spy photos reveal for the first time new rear lights as well as different body attributes to the production prototype first seen two years ago. Some exterior differences include the absence of a rear diffuser and in its place is a kind of mesh net. A new front bumper also appears.

The Lexus LF-A has been one long development project since it was shown as a concept car at the 2005 Detroit Motor Show. Even as Toyota Motor Corporation reported its first year-on-year loss of 436.9 billion yen (US$4.47 billion) last week, new spy pictures of a production LF-A have been snapped. It seems the car is very much on track for production then. This is not the one hidden under the race car body which was seen at the Nürburgring.

The LF-A will feature a number of technical innovations to ensure its environmental friendliness as well as high performance credentials. Those in the know have constantly said the car will be powered by a V10 engine worth between 500hp (368kW) and 600hp (441kW).

A convertible/roadster LF-A concept was unveiled in January 2008 but there is currently no clarity on whether it will be produced or not. What is speculated a lot is that the production coupe will be shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show in preparation for its 2011 market launch.

Lexus will race a 4.8 liter V10 LF-A at the 24-hour Nürburgring which takes place from May 21.
