BMW unveiled its limited-edition M3 CRT at a special M Night event prior to the start of this weekend's 24 Hours of Nurburgring. The M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) showcases the worldwide debut of a new production process for carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components. Only 67 M3 CRTs will be built, and none will be sold in the U.S.

The BMW M3 CRT uses the new material in its bonnet - where it brings a weight saving of around 50 per cent over the regular aluminium unit - and the front seats. Other features include a new spec of soundproofing and two individual rear seats which take styling cues from the front items.

Power comes from the same engine as the hardcore M3 GTS, with the 4.4-litre V8 turned up to deliver 443bhp and 324 lb ft of torque. With a power-to-weight ratio of 272bhp/ tonne, and standard-fit twin-clutch transmission - that’s good enough to blast the CRT from 0-62mph in a claimed 4.4 seconds, 0.5 seconds quicker than the standard M3 saloon.

A rare type of machine, it gets rarer still with BMW planning to produce just 67 units, painted in Frozen Polar Silver metallic with Melbourne Red accenting and a black and orange interior.

Other weight savers include a titanium muffler, lightweight wheels and upgraded calibers. The cost of all this is a rumored €130,000 EUR (approximately $185,000 USD).

Intelligent lightweight design paves the way for even higher performance: the BMW M3 CRT.


Carbon Racing Technology: BMW M GmbH factory produces a limited-edition high-performance sports car based on the BMW M3 Saloon – Innovative use of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic minimises weight – Weight-to-power ratio: 3.5 kilograms per horsepower.

Munich/Nürburg. BMW M GmbH will use the M Night event in the lead-up to the Nürburgring 24-hour race to unveil a spectacular new addition to its model range. The BMW M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) embodies a concentrated blend of state-of-the-art development expertise – inspired directly by motor sport – in the areas of drive system and chassis technology and intelligent lightweight design. It also represents the worldwide debut of a new production process for carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components in the automotive industry. This process allows CFRP to be introduced widely in the construction of the high-performance BMW M3 Saloon-based sports car created by the BMW M GmbH factory. And that helps it achieve a weight-to-power ratio of 3.5 kilograms per horsepower. A V8 engine with customary M high-revving characteristics and maximum output of 331 kW/450 hp accelerates the BMW M3 CRT from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. The BMW M3 CRT will be produced by the BMW M GmbH factory in a limited run of 67 units. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW M3 GTS – of which 135 examples were produced – this is the second small-series, high-performance M3 off-shoot to be bred for the race track but registered for the road. The exclusive character of the Saloon is emphasised by bespoke lightweight design components manufactured as part of an innovative production process. The bonnet of the BMW M3 CRT and the bucket seats for the driver and front passenger are made from a cellular carbon honeycomb, which is produced in a globally unique process pioneered for the manufacture of body components for the BMW i3 and BMW i8 models.

Innovative manufacturing process for lightweight CFRP components.

These new models – due to enter volume production in 2013 and equipped with innovative electric and BMW ActiveHybrid drivesystem technology – will feature a body consisting entirely of CFRP in the passenger cell area. In a new development, the production process introduced for this purpose enables the cuttings left behind in the construction of the body to be reprocessed. The basic material (made up of carbon fibre thread) can now be woven into CFRP mats of any size before being impregnated with synthetic resin and hardened in a similar way to the material used in the body of the BMW i3 and BMW i8. For the BMW M3 CRT this allows the creation of a bonnet made from two CFRP mouldings encasing an aramid honeycomb structure. This construction imbues the bonnet with the strength of a conventional steel equivalent, but at roughly a quarter of its weight. The weight saving over the aluminium bonnet of the standard BMW M3 Saloon is around 50 per cent.

The material produced through this innovative manufacturing technology is also used for the car's bucket seats. Here, the CFRP layers are wrapped around a recycled-paper honeycomb, with a carbon layer made using conventional production technology added to visible areas. CFRP is also used to make both the rear spoiler of the BMW M3 CRT and an air-channelling element integrated into its front apron.

This innovative manufacturing process opens up considerable potential for increased use of CFRP in series-produced cars as a means of lowering weight. The BMW Group is leading the way in this area of automotive construction, while BMW M GmbH can call on extensive racing expertise when it comes to intelligent lightweight design. The BMW M3 CRT is the latest in a fine tradition of highly exclusive high-performance sports cars optimised with the help of lightweight design. This lineage stretches back to the BMW 3.0 CSL of the 1970s and reached another high point in 2002 with the BMW M3 CSL. BMW M GmbH also broke new ground with the use of CFRP in series-produced vehicles; like the BMW M6 produced up to
2010, the current BMW M3 Coupé comes as standard with a roof made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic.

Significant weight reduction despite generous standard equipment.

The low-weight construction of the BMW M3 CRT is enhanced by sound-proofing configured specially for the new variant and a sports exhaust system with an extremely lightweight titanium muffler. Also unique to the CRT are the two individual rear seats, which take their cues from the lateral support-enhancing contours of the front seats.

Included in the standard specification of the BMW M3 CRT are the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, Navigation system Professional, BMW Individual High End audio system, a light, exterior mirror and luggage area package, an alarm system and Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear of the car. Despite this extremely generous selection of standard kit, its DIN unladen weight of 1,580 kg undercuts that of the standard BMW M3 Saloon by around 45 kg. When you take into account the equipment on board the weight saving is more like 70 kg. Added to which, cleverly reducing the load at the front of the car raises the proportion of the car's weight over the rear axle to 48.4 per cent, which has an extremely positive effect on agility.

High-revving V8 engine with extra power; M DCT Drivelogic.

Under the CFRP bonnet of the BMW M3 CRT lies a variant of the V8 engine developed exclusively for the BMW M3 with further increased displacement, output and maximum torque. The high-revving unit provides the linear power delivery you expect from an M car and a highly responsive performance profile honed by the demands of the race track. Tuned for the BMW M3 GTS, the eight-cylinder engine develops 331 kW/450 hp from its 4,360 cc displacement. Maximum output is reached at 8,300 rpm, and the driver will find peak torque of 440 Newton metres on tap at 3,750 rpm. Helping to give the engine its intoxicating performance is wizardry derived directly from motor sport, including a bedplate crankcase construction in a special aluminium-silicon alloy, individual throttle butterflies, a knock control system with ion current technology and a dynamically-optimised wet sump oil supply.

Transferring the engine's power to the rear wheels is the M doubleclutch transmission with Drivelogic developed for the BMW M3. The seven-speed M DCT Drivelogic unit also works according to a principle developed in motor sport, allowing an uninterrupted flow of power through gear changes to deliver extremely dynamic acceleration. Its shift characteristics have been tuned specially for the engine powering the BMW M3 CRT. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow the driver to change gear manually with optimum ergonomics. And a Launch Control function is on hand to generate maximum acceleration off the start line.

Special chassis construction with race-bred technology.

Expertise from race competition also makes its presence felt in the chassis technology of the BMW M3 CRT. The BMW M3 Saloon's front and rear axle construction has been enhanced by a rigid rear axle subframe and coilover suspension whose dampers are individually adjustable in their compression and rebound. The sixpiston, fixed-calliper high-performance brakes of the BMW M3 CRT boast a low-weight compound construction. The vented brake discs measure 378 x 32 millimetres at the front axle and 380 x 28 millimetres at the rear. The new M3 variant also uses Stahlflex brake lines and model-specific comfort brake pads.

The specially tuned DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system – including ABS and M Dynamic Mode (MDM) – responds to both the greater dynamic potential of the BMW M3 CRT and its optimised axle load distribution. Meanwhile, the 245/35 R 19 front tyres and 265/35 R 19 rears (fitted on 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design) ensure the engine's acceleration and braking power is transferred to the road with maximum impact. The electronic engine management of the BMW M3 CRT caps its top speed at 290 km/h.

The exclusive Frozen Polar Silver metallic exterior paint shade in combination with Melbourne Red metallic applications and special treatment for the BMW kidney grille also help to set the BMW M3 CRT apart from the standard M3. Inside, the Saloon comes with likewise exclusive door sill strips, door panels and trim strips in aluminium grain structure. Completing the distinctive ambience inside the high-performance Saloon are the Alcantara-covered M steering wheel, which has an M Drive button allowing the driver to call up his preferred set-up instantly, and special Sakhir Orange and Black bi-colour covers for the front and individual rear seats.

New York Auto Show: 2012 Kia Rio

The 2012 Kia Rio sedan will be unveiled at the 2011 New York International Auto Show in around three weeks ahead of the vehicle’s Australian debut in the fourth quarter of this year.

Full technical details for the Rio line-up have yet to be released, although Kia has confirmed that a full six petrol and diesel engines will be available internationally, from a 51kW 1.1 litre diesel engine through to a 103kW 1.6 litre GDI petrol engine.

Four powertrains will be available on the Rio overseas – two gas and two diesel – and while mum's the word on which engine(s) will be available here in the United States, we're putting our money on the 1.4-liter gasoline four. This mill produces 108 horsepower and 100 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or four-speed(!) automatic transmission.

2012 Buick Verano

We've known about General Motors' plan to build a compact Buick sedan called the Verano for some time and we'll finally have a chance to see it in the sheetmetal at the 2011 Detroit show.

The leaked order study comes from GM Inside News, and reveals that there will be four different trim levels of the Verano -- the SB, SD, SG, and SL. It also indicates there will only be one engine offered, GM's familiar 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter I-4 rather than the 1.8- or 1.4-liter turbo offered in the Cruze. Also, despite positioning the car as the entry-level Buick and recently re-adding manual transmission offerings in the Regal, no such transmission is planned for the Verano.

The exterior is simple, perhaps a bit bland, but is marked by elegant touches such as a waterfall grille with black chrome accents and blue halo rings that set off the headlights. The proportions are deliberately stretched for a long cabin, and the wheels and tires are pulled out toward the corners. Naturally, there are portholes.

Inside, the cockpit is exactly what you'd expect out of a car that is essentially the lovechild of a Cruze and Regal, with Buick-spec materials fit-and-finish carried down into a smaller package. Even so, the Verano's cabin is only about two cubic feet less capacious than the larger Regal, and we already know that the Cruze is still plenty comfortable for four full-size adults. In addition to standard OnStar, the Verano will be available with features like pushbutton start, dual-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel and heated leather seats.

Pricing has not yet been announced on Verano, but GM said earlier that the car will be priced between $21,000 and $26,000.

DETROIT – The all-new 2012 Buick Verano compact luxury sedan, the brand's third new model in the past two years and first in the compact luxury segment, will be revealed at the North American International Auto Show.

Verano goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, the latest model in a product renaissance that began with the Enclave and continued with the LaCrosse and Regal. Like them, Verano is distinguished by luxury and technology, including 10 standard air bags, an available heated steering wheel and a next-generation radio system with OnStar-powered connectivity that enables seamless communication between the Verano and the driver's smart phone.

An Ecotec 2.4L and six-speed automatic powertrain combination is standard and delivers an estimated 177 horsepower (132 kW) and 170 lb.-ft. torque (230 Nm), 0-60 mph performance of 8.0 seconds and an estimated 31 mpg on the highway. A 2.0L turbo engine will be offered in the future.

"Verano expands our lineup, continues Buick's momentum and gives us a great opportunity to attract a new generation of customers with a product that delivers on their expectations for design, performance and technology," said John Schwegman, vice president of Buick marketing. "It is a smart choice that delivers unexpected luxury in a compact sedan – and it will compete head-to-head with competitors from Audi and Lexus."

Five elements infused in Verano that define its character:

Sculpted design

Verano carries the modern Buick design cues introduced on the Enclave and interpreted for the LaCrosse and Regal. They include a bold, detailed black chrome waterfall grille, prominent blue translucent projector beam headlamps, portholes, chrome accents, premium wheels and a tailored body-to-wheel relationship. An arching roofline connects a steeply raked windshield and fast-sloping rear pillars to give the car a sporty profile that's complemented by large, 17-inch standard multi-spoke forged alloy sterling silver-finish wheels. Two premium 18-inch wheel designs are available.

"Verano translates Buick's sculptural design language in a new size, with all the refinement and attention to detail pioneered by the Enclave and LaCrosse," said Dave Lyon, design director. "Beyond all that, it's simply a great-looking car. It has great proportions and sophisticated details that will look great for years to come."

Unique to Verano are translucent blue projector-beam headlamps, which give the car a distinctive, upscale appearance. A palette of rich colors enhances the premium look, including Claret Red Tintcoat and White Diamond Tricoat. Other exterior color choices include Black, Olympic White, Switchblade Silver Metallic, Cyber Gray Metallic and Mocha Bronze Metallic.

Luxurious interior

Complementing Verano's precisely crafted, premium-accented exterior is an interior marked by exceptional seat comfort and support, as well as premium soft-touch materials, including ambient lighting inspired by the LaCrosse. Metallic and wood trims and warm ambient lighting make the cabin an inviting environment.

Neutral and medium titanium colors are offered on interiors with leatherette/fabric seating surfaces, while ebony, cashmere and a unique Choccachino color are offered on the available leather-trimmed interiors. Verano uses the same premium leather material for the seats that is used on the LaCrosse.

The instrument panel blends with an integrated center stack that houses the infotainment display, climate controls and radio controls. Flush-mounted components within the center stack have a gap tolerance of less than 1 mm, while the instrument panel-to-door panel gaps are less than 5 mm. Those tolerances are among the best in class.

Verano's headliner cover is made of a knit material that is one of five layers of an acoustically designed headliner to help quiet the passenger compartment. The interior pillar and other moldings are color- and grain-matched to the headliner.

Additional interior standard and available features include:

• Push-button engine start
• Dual-zone climate control with standard air conditioning (automatic climate control available)
• Heated steering wheel
• Heated leather-appointed seating
• Electronic parking brake
• Console armrest that slides and locks
• Power windows with express up/down in the front and express down in the rear
• Steering wheel radio controls
• Uplevel front and rear reading lamps.

Verano's heated steering wheel and heated seats are linked with the remote start feature. In temperatures lower than 45 F (7 C), the steering wheel heater and seat heaters automatically activate.

Quiet tuning

Verano delivers the library-quiet driving experience for which Buicks have become known. Quiet-tuning systems, processes and components are built into every facet of the vehicle's architecture. All are designed to block or absorb sound and dampen or eliminate vibrations.

Hydraulic ride bushings, for example, and an isolated engine cradle reduce or eliminate vibration pathways that could be transmitted to the passenger compartment. Similarly, a number of noise-reducing and noise-cancelling technologies are employed throughout the body structure, including:

• The steel front-of-dash panel is sandwiched between two damping mats
• Nylon baffles are used in various hollow portions of the body structure and filled with sound-absorbing foam that expands when the body enters the paint oven
• The headliner comprises five layers of thermal fiber acoustic material, including a premium woven fabric on the visible outer layer
• Patches of sound-damping material are applied strategically throughout the body structure and melt into place when the body passes through the paint oven, allowing the patches to follow the contours of the sheet metal below
• Sound insulation material between rear-body structural components that is made from recycled denim
• Triple-sealed doors that feature fiberglass "blankets" serve as water, airflow and noise barriers. The doors are also beta-braced, meaning they close with a solid, precise sound and no resonance
• Optimized windshield and side glass for quietness, with 5.4-mm-thick laminated windshield and 4.85-mm laminated side glass
• The engine's intake and exhaust systems are tuned for quiet performance
• Isolated brake and fuel lines prevent vibrations.

Even the wheels and tires contribute to Verano's quietness. The standard 17-inch aluminum wheels are manufactured in a unique way to enhance quietness, while the tires minimize road noise.

Refined and responsive performance

A power-dense Ecotec 2.4L four-cylinder, with dual-overhead camshafts, variable valve timing and E85 capability, is the standard engine in the Verano. It produces an estimated 177 horsepower (132 kW) and 170 lb.-ft. of torque (230 Nm). Direct injection technology helps it produce more power with less fuel and lower emissions – including up to 25-percent reduced hydrocarbon emissions when compared with a multi-point fuel injection engine. The engine is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that helps the Verano deliver an estimated 31 mpg on the highway. Electric power steering and a more efficient transmission design help optimize fuel economy.

The front suspension uses decoupled MacPherson struts for better isolation, providing greater separation of extreme road conditions – large potholes, for example – from everyday driving conditions. At the rear, a technically advanced Watts Z-link design helps center the rear axle during cornering, which helps keep the Verano's handling responses symmetrical on both left-hand and right-hand turns. The linkage's capability to center the axle during cornering delivers a more-balanced driving experience because the rear suspension better follows the lead of the front suspension.

The Z-link design is also lighter and requires less space than a typical fully independent rear suspension. The lower weight contributes to Verano's fuel economy, while the compact design enables more trunk space.

Steering inputs are executed by an electric power steering system, featuring a dual-pinion rack. Electric powering steering helps save fuel because it removes the conventional power steering pump from the engine's driven accessories. Engineers tuned the speed-sensitive system to provide quick, direct reaction to steering actions and a strong on-center feel. The system has a ratio of 15.5:1 and requires only slightly more than two turns, lock to lock.

Stopping power is handled by a four-wheel disc brake system with standard anti-lock and electronic brake force distribution, as well as StabiliTrak electronic stability control with traction control.

Purposeful technology

Comprehensive connectivity is enabled by OnStar's remote vehicle access, which makes keeping tabs on the vehicle a breeze from anywhere with a smart phone. Highlights include:

• Passive entry
• Heated steering wheel
• Touch screen navigation system
• Bluetooth connectivity (both phone and audio)
• XM Satellite Radio
• Bose sound system
• Next-generation radio.

Downloading an OnStar app enables the use of remote vehicle features from anywhere in the world. With a few taps, customers can check the:

• Fuel tank level and range
• Fuel mileage
• Remaining oil life
• Tire pressure
• Odometer reading.

Other remote-access features include remote vehicle locking/unlocking, remote vehicle start and a vehicle locator.

The next-generation radio system includes a navigation system, along with USB and auxiliary input jacks, and includes full Bluetooth with streaming audio, structural speech recognition, SMS texts and more. Additional connectivity features include text-to-speech conversion of SMS texts, smart phone app integration (Pandora, Stitcher, etc.) and Gracenote music organization for external devices (USB drives, etc.), including Playlist Plus and Album Art features.

Safety is another component in Verano's technology story. Primary features include:

• Ten standard air bags, including frontal, head curtain side air bags, front and outboard rear-seat side-impact air bags and new knee air bags. The head-curtain side air bags deploy in a rollover crash
• StabiliTrak electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes
• Collapsible pedal system, which allows the pedals to detach during a crash to reduce the risk of leg or ankle injuries
• OnStar with Automatic Crash Response.

Verano has a strong, unitized body structure that incorporates 60-percent high-strength steel in key areas to enhance strength and crash protection. It is used to help prevent intrusion into the passenger compartment. Safety development included testing at GM's rollover test facility.


Ford has announced that every new 2012 Focus will hit dealers early next year fitted with the company’s new "torque vectoring control." The system actively split power between the two driven wheels to maximize traction and increase performance. This is the first time such a device has been fitted to a Blue Oval car in North America.

Depending on the wheel sensors, torque vectoring control can brake either drive wheel in an attempt to reduce slippage and improve driving stability. On a twisty, dry road, the usual suspect is an overloaded inner front wheel, and TVC will allow the transaxle to send more torque through the outer half-shaft.

Torque vectoring control uses the Focus braking system to imitate the effect of limited-slip differential, constantly balancing the distribution of engine output between the driven front wheels to suit driving conditions and road surface. When accelerating through a tight corner, the system applies an imperceptible degree of braking to the inside front wheel, so that more engine torque goes to the outside wheel, providing additional traction, better grip and improved vehicle handling.

Engineered to increase novice driver confidence by adding a finer sense of control in curves, the next-generation Focus will please enthusiast drivers as well with the addition of a vehicle stability control system previously reserved for premium sports cars.

"The new Focus is the first North American Ford vehicle to offer torque vectoring control," said Rick Bolt, program manager for the Ford Focus. "This is a technology that has been offered on high-end sports cars, yet Ford is making it standard on their new small car."

The slight braking pressure applied to just one driven wheel is imperceptible to the driver. The behind-the-wheel experience is an improved sense of stability and control throughout the curve. This increased vehicle stability in cornering situations is sure to please enthusiast drivers yet serves as a confidence builder for novice drivers as well.

Torque vectoring control uses the Focus braking system to imitate the effect of limited-slip differential, constantly balancing the distribution of engine output between the driven front wheels to suit driving conditions and road surface. When accelerating through a tight corner, the system applies an imperceptible degree of braking to the inside front wheel, so that more engine torque goes to the outside wheel, providing additional traction, better grip and improved vehicle handling.

The system is designed to delight experienced and enthusiastic drivers but also to provide less- experienced drivers with confidence and a better sense of vehicle control, especially in difficult driving conditions.

The all-new 2012 Ford Focus goes on sale in early 2011.


Heico Sportiv has releases today the Heico Volvo S60 price for the European and UK market. Volvo has followed right behind with their own special edition that they have developed in collaboration with that same tuner. Together they have produced the S60 T6 Design that will be built in a limited 100 units and priced at €63,968 (around $81,000 at the current exchange rates).

The Volvo S60 T6 Design by Heico Sportiv is based on the standard model of the new sedan and has a revised six-cylinder turbo petrol engine under the hood, which performs 26 hp more and therefore 330 hp (243 kW) with a 20Nm increase maximal of torque of 460 Nm in the speed range of 2100-4500 in one minute. The increase by Heico Sportiv to 330 hp (243 kW) is a result of Heico Sportiv e.motion. Heico Sportiv e.motion stands for "efficiency in motion" and describes an additional engine control unit including a revised engine management system.

Volvo S60 T6 special edition will feature Black Sapphire metallic paint and will be equipped with 19-inch Diamond cut alloys with Pirelli tyres, a two-part front spoiler, and a rear diffuser bumper made of superlight plastic and carbon fiber.

Under the hood the engine has been tuned to deliver 330 Hp and 460 NM of torque. The 0 to 60 mph sprint is now made in 5.8 seconds, while top speed is still electronically limited to 155 mph.

The other features of Heico Volvo which is based on the Summum trim level includes the Volvo safety and luxury features as well as heated front seats, rearview camera, RTI navigation system, aluminum and leather trim and a numbered Limited Edition plate.

Performance tuning specialists, Heico Sportiv, have turned their attention to the all-new Volvo S60 and developed a storming 330 PS version of the T6. Just 100 versions of the Black Sapphire metallic special edition will be available at a price of €63,968, equivalent to just over £53,000.

The hot Volvo S60 T6 Design by Heico Sportiv is based on the standard model and has received an upgrade to the six-cylinder turbo petrol engine, offering a 26 PS power improvement - from 304 PS to 330 PS. The power increase is a result of Heico Sportiv e.motion technology, which stands for "efficiency in motion" and features an additional engine control unit and a revised engine management system. Torque has also been improved to 460 Nm over 2100-4500rpm and to support the extra power, new sports springs have been fitted to the Four C chassis which lower the car’s ride height by 30mm. For perfect traction, the high-performance saloon is fitted with standard permanent All Wheel Drive.

The engine is mated to Volvo’s Geartronic transmission and, as a result, the car sprints from 0-62 mph in 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 mph (electronically controlled). Average fuel consumption is 27.4 mpg, corresponding to CO2 emissions of 239 g/km (provisional figures).

To compliment the sporting ability under the bonnet, the Black Sapphire metallic Volvo S60 T6 Design by Heico Sportiv is equipped with 19-inch Diamond cut alloys with Pirelli tyres and a two-part front spoiler and rear diffuser bumper made of superlight plastic and carbon fibre.

On the inside, Heico has developed the interior by fitting aluminium trimmed gearknob and pedals and a limited edition plate which identifies the specific production number of the car. The car also features a comprehensive range of specifications alongside all the familiar Volvo safety technology, including Driver Alert, BLIS (Blind Sport Information System) and Pedestrian Detection.

Heico has more than 20 years experience in the refinement and performance of Volvo models, and has been an official partner of Volvo Car Germany GmbH since 2008. Currently there are no plans by to introduce the car into the S60 line-up in the UK.
