A holistic approach to electric mobility. smart forvision: A look at the future of electric mobility
Stuttgart, Sep 01, 2011

smart has always been a pioneer in matters of urban mobility and with the smart fortwo electric drive the company is showing the direction of development in cities around the world. Together with BASF, the largest automotive supplier in the chemical industry, smart is demonstrating its leading role in the use of forward-looking technologies above and beyond the drive system. The joint concept vehicle smart forvision presented at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt combines a futuristic design with technologies relating to energy efficiency, lightweight design and temperature management.

"With the forvision smart is doing justice to its role as Daimler's think tank for urban mobility. We are presenting numerous world premieres that make uncompromising electric mobility possible. With the clear objective of greatly increasing the zero-emission range we concerned ourselves with all factors that influence this on the vehicle. This resulted in completely new concepts and materials in the areas of insulation, reflection, lightweight design and energy management. In addition to transparent organic solar cells, transparent and energy-saving light-emitting diodes and infrared-reflective films and coatings, high-performance foams are used for insulation against cold and heat. smart is also setting new standards of lightweight design with the use of the first all-plastic wheels", says Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart. "In conjunction with smart's revolutionary DNA, we have designed a vehicle that is so unique that we can't wait to take it out of the research laboratory and onto the roads!"

"Cars of the future need materials and technologies which reduce energy consumption whilst also increasing the range and level of comfort. Our innovations make a decisive contribution to this", says Dr. Christian Fischer, Head of BASF Polymer Research. "We are proud to have developed a holistic concept for sustainable urban mobility in cooperation with smart. Together we are presenting a pioneering vehicle which is without parallel.

Thanks to the combination of smart's automotive expertise and BASF's material and system competence a vehicle has been created which showcases technologies for sustainable and holistic electric mobility of the future. The researchers and designers intentionally realised a mixture of visionary materials and technologies in the concept vehicle - some of these are still at a laboratory stage, while others have a realistic chance of entering series production.

Energy efficiency: light and energy from above
The hexagonal transparent areas on the roof of the smart forvision are an eye-catching feature - as the first light-transmitting roof that also generates energy. Transparent solar cells covering the entire roof surface are the technology used here. They are based on organic dyes embedded in a sandwich roof. The transparent dyes of the solar cells are light-activated. Even in diffused light and poor light conditions they generate enough energy to power the multimedia components and the three fans that assist with climate management in the vehicle interior. If the vehicle is standing in the sun the ventilation is permanently operated with the help of these solar cells, keeping the car cool. This new photovoltaic technology opens up further efficiency potential and the energy generated can be used for further applications in the car.

There is an additional new feature under the solar cells: transparent OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) illuminate the vehicle interior when the door is opened or a button pressed. When switched off they allow for a clear view outside. This results in a glass roof effect during the daytime, whilst the areas are pleasantly illuminated without any dazzle at night. Thanks to a free choice of colours the new OLEDs do not only offer more design freedom, they also consume less than half as much energy as conventional energy-saving lamps.

Lightweight design: different, better, stylish
In the smart forvision a world first leads to a considerable weight reduction and a unique design: the first all-plastic wheel suitable for high-volume production. In its current development status, the wheel developed by BASF from a new high-performance material results in a considerable weight saving of three kilograms per wheel. Unlike conventional polyamide composite materials this new plastic has long reinforcing fibres which improve its mechanical properties. The result: excellent thermal and chemical stability, dynamic strength, toughness and good continuous operating characteristics. First intensive product tests at smart show the performance capability of the all-plastic wheel and confirm the potential for possible use in production vehicles.
In addition to the tridion passenger cell, further components such as the doors are made of carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin - a high-performance composite material. The use of such materials enables a weight saving of more than 50 percent to be achieved compared with steel, or 30 percent compared with aluminium. Thanks to short hardening times the resin systems from BASF are also suitable for producing larger volumes.

Heating: close to the body and efficient
The multifunctional, comfortable and lightweight seats in the smart forvision offer a unique combination of efficient temperature management and an energy-saving lightweight design. Here, several innovative products are combined with one another for the first time. A new, lightweight, self-supporting plastic seat shell forms the basis.

Numerous studies have shown that the body only absorbs heat efficiently through certain contact points. This is why "e-textiles" - thin fabrics with custom-tailored conductive coatings - replace conventional seat heating in the smart forvision. With direct heating close to the body in the middle and lower back area of the seats they provide for a pleasant feeling of warmth. The energy, space and weight-saving e-textile technology is also found in the armrests of the doors and ensures that body contact points sensitive to the cold are also warmed in this area.

The innovations continue with the seat foam, which provides for both comfort and weight savings. The material from BASF is around 10 to 20 percent lighter than other materials and enables different degrees of hardness to be realised in different areas of the upholstery in a single work operation - resulting in clear ergonomic advantages.

Superabsorbent containing fleece fabric integrated in the seat greatly enhances seating comfort through its passive climate control. Compared with conventional climate-controlled seats the lightweight seat in the smart forvision does not have the complexity and energy requirement of mechanical ventilation.

Temperature management: heat stays outside
As a large amount of energy is needed to air condition and heat a vehicle, temperature management was a key focus area for the smart and BASF researchers. A whole package of measures has been implemented in the smart forvision to ensure more efficient air conditioning of the vehicle.
At the same time they make energy-intensive heating of the whole interior superfluous.

A heat shield that has not been previously used for automotive applications consists of a new kind of infrared-reflective film from BASF applied in the windscreen and side windows, protecting the car interior from heating up. Integrated between the panes of the safety glass the metal-free film ensures that the infrared rays are effectively reflected. Thanks to its high transparency in the visible range it can also be applied to tinted windows and guarantees an unprecedented level of reflection of sunlight and heat. Unlike metallized films, which are already used in some vehicles, the new film reflects only the infrared rays of the sun. Radio waves needed to use GPS, Bluetooth, mobile phones or for toll collection pass through the glass unhindered.

The high-performance foams from BASF fitted in the bodypanels also provide for a pleasant climate inside the car. They keep the vehicle pleasantly cool in summer and also insulate it against the cold in winter. Thanks to their high efficiency even in a small width, they can be fitted everywhere in the vehicle. With this innovative insulation system in the smart forvision, the two companies are breaking new ground in the automotive sector.

Cool coatings - cool interior
The infrared-reflective and extremely scratch-resistant coating system covers two important aspects at once. Firstly, it supports the extensive temperature management system and, secondly, the brilliant and high-quality look of the coating underlines the unique design of the smart forvision. The concept vehicle features a white special-effect coating with glass flakes that create a gleaming metallic look. An important side effect: the colour white reflects heat rays from sun and light particularly well. But even surfaces coated with dark colours stay much cooler thanks to special colour pigments from BASF. They ensure that heat radiation is reflected rather than absorbed. This leads to a temperature reduction of up to 20 degrees Celsius on the paint surface and of up to approximately four degrees in the vehicle interior.

Futuristic design trendsetter
Painted in pearl white and accentuated by the tridion safety cell coated with a copper-coloured liquid metal paint, there is a deliberate connection between the basic structure of the smart forvision and the design of the smart fortwo. Trendy yet high quality - the aluminium flakes in the liquid metal paintwork create a reflecting surface on the safety cell, changing between light and dark depending on the viewer's perspective. Both the panels and the cell of the smart forvision are additionally painted with an extremely scratch-resistant clear coat.

The faceted side doors with integrated door openers are a real eye-catcher. Here, plastic is presented in a new, expressive and three-dimensional form; a reinterpretation that is only possible at smart thanks to the consistent use of plastic. The precise facets give the area stability and enable a smaller material thickness to be used. Optimal use is made of the possibilities offered by plastic as a material. In contrast, the front and rear have a softer design with smooth transitions from the doors. Just as the integrated door handle does not need an additional component, the familiar smart air inlet is represented by small hexagons located right on the outer skin.
The jet-like rear lights are reminiscent of small aircraft turbines and give the rear a futuristic and sporty look. Inside the lights, small propellers convey the air from the inside to the outside. In addition to all the light functions needed, transparent stacks in the form of rings around the lights also show the charge status of the battery during charging.

The headlamps are emphasised by a ring comprising the daytime driving lights and indicator functions. The lights add to the likeable expression of the smart forvision.

Doors open to the future
With a mix of polygonal surfaces and organic shapes the interior of the smart forvision builds a bridge to the architectural design handwriting of the exterior. This also applies to the colour concept: a cool white dominates in the interior as well, accentuated by the inner part of the instrument panel in liquid copper. Hexagons in the form of white rubber nubs on a white floor are a reference to the design idiom of the overall vehicle, as is the tone-in-tone design of the seat upholstery.

The faceted surface of the side doors is also found on their inside. The polygonal surfaces with integrated armrests and stowage compartments curve into the interior. They are painted in the body colour and feature coloured LEDs. These guide the driver with a light animation running from the outside to the inside when the door is opened and closed. After closing the door the animation changes to unobtrusive ambient lighting.

The elliptical user interface with a copper coloured frame - matching the lightweight tridion - is semi-transparent when switched off. When the vehicle is switched on all cockpit information is then projected onto the transparent surface. The driver uses a touchscreen to switch between operating menus.

The white steering wheel that is reminiscent of an aircraft yoke additionally gives the cockpit a futuristic look. As well as function buttons the LED display for the battery charge status is found here.

Forward-looking technologies
The smart forvision not only shows that electric mobility can make emission-free driving possible. At the same time, it paves the way for new technologies in the automotive sector. Many of these innovations are based on nano technology, the key to the development of sustainable solutions. Nano materials serve as drivers of innovation in the automotive industry, as they do in the fields of construction, energy, healthcare and electronics.

The total of all technologies integrated in the concept vehicle make a perceptible contribution to increasing the range.

This is always at the centre of discussions relating to battery-electric driven vehicles. With maximum energy efficiency, intelligent temperature management and consistent lightweight construction it is possible to increase the range by up to 20 percent. An additional bonus for electric mobility of the future.

Lorinser Launches Easybrid smart fortwo

Lorinser has announced plans to introduce the Easybrid conversion package at the Essen Motor Show. which will be held between November 27 and December 5

Easybrid® supports the existing fuel- or diesel engines of the individual cars and renders an additional power of approximately 30 kW (about 41hp) for improved acceleration- and final speed outputs. At the same time, the consumption- and CO2-levels drop. As electric engines are very powerful and their maximum torque is reached after only one revolution, it is also possible to move these cars solely on an electric basis.

The Lorinser Easybrid hub motor is not developed for the Smart Fortwo only, and can be fitted to any car that has drum brakes at the rear axle. The stators of the Lorinser Easybrid hub motor are adapted to the braking armature discs.

As the modification is usually added to the rear axle, this car or any other that get this system therefore turned into four wheel drive cars which render additional traction advantages at winter time.

Lorinser presents Easybrid® at the Essen Motor Show 2010 - an innovative retrofit hub motor for compact cars

Which driver of a compact car has not already wished for more power in his automobile and if possible without extra fuel consumption and any additional environmental pollution? But up till now, this went hand in hand with the other and therefore such wishes remained unfulfilled. On the Essen Motor Show 2010, Sportservice Lorinser now presents Easybrid® as an innovative solution. A retrofit electric hub motor with 30 kW additional effective output, exemplarily fitted in a Smart Fortwo.

Already at the beginning of the 20th century, automobile manufacturers experimented with hub motors and fitted them into their cars - among them also Ferdinand Porsche. Nevertheless, this development was soon destined for obscurity, as the general public rather wanted a combustion engine. Due to the further increasing fuel prices and the current environmental-, climate- and CO2-debates, more and more companies are thinking about the future of individual mobility and display electric cars and hybrid automobiles, yet knowing that these will not get over their concept car status for the time being. Especially German automobile manufacturers seem to have missed the trend and only fit hybrid technology into luxury class automobiles if after all.

But what if it was possible to fit hybrid technology as a retrofit solution into cars whichare designed for everybody? Is it after all possible to retrofit compact cars? Would such a modification not be too elaborate and therefore too expensive? Sportservice Lorinser, usually known for its sportive refining of Mercedes Benz automobiles, is now tackling these questions. The company based in Waiblingen / Swabia and its project manager Martin Oberdoerfer-Schmidt conclude: "The modification is possible and can also be performed in an easy and therefore economic way."

The preconditions are that the automobile in question has to have drum brakes at the rear axle, but this is quite common with small and compact cars. So-called stators are adapted to the braking armature discs. These are accumulated electric coils which are supplied with directed power via control electronics in order to magnetise them and therefore turn the rotor on the wheel hub which is equipped with permanent magnets in rolling direction.

Therefore, any kind of engine, differential and driving shaft becomes unnecessary as the engine directly affects the individual wheel and accelerates it. Altogether, this means that the nominal capacity of the electronic motor is transferred to the road nearly without any frictional loss. With the help of a control unit the power of the hub motors is added to the initial power of the combustion engine. As the modification is usually added to the rear axle, many of the vehicles in question are therefore turned into four wheel drive cars which render additional traction advantages at winter time.

Easybrid® supports the existing fuel- or diesel engines of the individual cars and renders an additional power of approximately 30 kW (about 41hp) for improved acceleration- and final speed outputs. At the same time, the consumption- and CO2- levels drop. As electric engines are very powerful and their maximum torque is reached after only one revolution, it is also possible to move these cars solely on an electric basis. With this retrofit solution, Lorinser does not only cover all advantages of modern hybrid acceleration, but also allows the driver to choose his operational mode. Apart from the combination of both engines, he can also opt for either the sole electronic or sole combustion engine. The driver can therefore decide if he wishes to use fuel or electricity or a combination of both.

In order to recharge the lithium ionic batteries of the electric engine which for space saving measures are either stored in the reserve wheel drop or under the vehicle, the automobile can either be connected to a usual socket or use the so-called recuperation during its operation. This means that the energy which is generated during braking and driving downhill recharges the batteries. Therefore, the car can run approximately 30 kilometres on sole electric power and depending on the model far than 500 kilometres with the combined hybrid mode. In a combination with modern turbodiesel engines, even wider distances are possible.

On the Essen Motor Show 2010 which starts on November 27th, Lorinser will introduce a first driveable prototype based on a Smart Fortwo with a retrofit hub motor. Further possible models suitable would be the Volkswagen Polo, the Renault Twingo or the Fiat 500. Also older models are suitable and in future, Lorinser will develop solutions for these models as well. Already since May 2009, the Lorinser engineers have been co-operating with external development partners on the retrofit hub motors and prototypes which were equipped with such technology. The test period will be ending by mid 2011 and from then on, it will be possible to equip first customer cars.

But of course, such a modification for compact cars only makes sense if it does not exceed the value of the automobile. Therefore, Sportservice Lorinser has revised the overall project and added an innovative idea. Following the offer for mobile phones, contracts can be introduced which bind a customer to an energy provider owning the batteries of the car on a long-term basis. The energy provider could therefore use its own battery as energy storage for vehicle-to-grid concepts and the car driver could pay the batteries by an increased energy price. Thereby, Lorinser pays tribute to the fact that mobility will not become any cheaper in future, but battery prices will significantly drop and fuel prices will surely increase.

Therefore, it is interesting for both parties - the drivers of electric- and hybrid cars as well as the utility companies. The latter could even introduce an energy flat rate for corporate clients with a fleet of electric automobiles. Such concepts are momentarily discussed with energy suppliers.

With such a battery financing concept between supplier and consumer, the modification of a compact car could come down to about EUR 5,000. If the government should participate in subsidising the lower CO2-emissions by putting an extra tax on automobiles with less favourable values, the effective costs for the hub motor retrofit could be even further reduced.

smart escooter: Electric smart on two wheels

With the purely electrically driven escooter, smart is presenting a further solution for intelligent urban mobility. The innovative two-wheel study translates consistently the characteristic advantages of the pioneering smart fortwo electric drive e-car into a two-wheeler: compact dimensions, agility, high safety standards and the driving fun typical of the smart brand, not least backed by an efficient and locally emission-free drivetrain. In addition to its innovative technical solutions, the new escooter convinces with its distinctive, state-of-the-art design and simple handling. One more advantage is the integration of smartphones: the further developed smart drive kit app has versatile functions such as those of a speedometer or range indicator. As a result, functionality, environmental sustainability and driving fun accompany the smart escooter. The smart two-wheeler will have its world premiere at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, giving visitors an outlook at future zero-emission products from the smart brand.

Dr. Annette Winkler, head of smart says "When our customers speak enthusiastically about their smart they describe the perfect city car that is manoeuvrable, flexible, safe, spacious and fast and offers lots of driving fun - on the road and when looking for a parking space. Lots of people are already looking forward to the zero-emission continuation of the "vision smart" with the smart electric drive, which will soon become a firm part of the cityscape. And now we are bringing all these features to two wheels with the escooter."

The smart escooter, as practical as unconventional, is most at home in big cities, where it can be used in a variety of ways. In urban traffic, the electric scooter is an intelligent amendment or alternative to the car - with its superior manoeuvrability, exemplary comfort and pioneering safety features. The latter include an airbag, ABS anti-lock brake system and a Blind Spot Assist.

"With the escooter, we consistently continue our "vision smart": even more driving fun in the city, even more adaptability to the respective living environment, even more flexibility - not least because it offers the possibility to be integrated in our car2go concept", says Annette Winkler.

The single lane escooter will enable smart to tap new growth potential. Two-wheelers will enable the brand to reach also considerable younger people who do not yet have a car driving licence. In addition, the two-wheel vehicles that have been configured for an "e-drive" from the outset also have functional and environmental advantages they convince with in inner city traffic. All in all, the smart escooter offers also the ideal prerequisites for integration in individual urban mobility concepts such as car2go.

Annette Winkler: "The escooter shows what an integrated, open approach we have to the subject of ‘urban mobility'. This pragmatic approach, combined with smart's typical fun factor, is what makes smart so special. We perceive mobility as a combination of responsibility and emotion - and our smart escooter accomodates this request in every respect."

smart escooter - anything but conventional

The smart escooter makes a first impression with its independent, unconventional design based on a sophisticated ergonomic concept. It exudes pure joie de vivre, introducing a fresh and surprising element into urban traffic. The design of the electric scooter is characterised by its attractive, sporty proportions: the front looks sorted and compact when viewed from the side, while the rear wheel gives the appearance of being positioned a long way behind the seat area, emphasising the scooter's forward thrust and agility. The dynamic, elegant appearance is underlined by its composition of complete surfaces and accentuated lines - designers talk of "iconic" design.

The cool appearance of the escooter is emphasised by affectionately crafted details that enhance its high-value yet trendy effect - from delicate cockpit panelling to a flush-fitted rear light. At the same time, the concept offers practical solutions, extreme ease of handling and outstanding safety.

The electric scooter's supporting chassis structure is consciously modelled on the tridion safety cell of the smart fortwo. Its steel and aluminium frame is clad with fully interchangeable plastic bodypanels. This is another clear parallel to the successful two-seater. A further special feature of the escooter are the long, extensive and translucent elements on the edges of the foot protection (front panelling). These illuminated side markers improve visibility from the side, and also serve as striking indicators.

The smart escooter guarantees distinguished impact in terms of "see and be seen" by means of state-of-the-art LED technology. Both the front headlamp, backlight and brake light are equipped with it.

Visual similarity to its four-wheeled big brother

The smart escooter's white paintwork with green accents underlines its relationship to the smart fortwo electric drive. Also in terms of suitability for everyday use, the electric scooter clearly bears the genes of the two-seater car. For example, the frame of the smart escooter does not only house technical components such as the battery and power electronics, but also offers additional storage space, for example for helmets.

Dynamic driving fun - of course, emission-free

In addition to environmental sustainability, the smart escooter has a focus on driving fun: it is driven by a disc-shaped wheel hub motor in the rear wheel, which offers a powerful 4 kW despite its compact size. The brushless direct current hub drive transmits its power directly to the rear wheel, and is clean and maintenance-free. A further advantage: as the motor does not take up any space in the chassis, more stowage space is available there.

As full torque is available right from the start, speedy moving is possible. At traffic lights, smart escooter riders can easily outpace most cars. They also benefit from the scooter's modern chassis design: front and rear wheels are each mounted on an elegant single-sided swingarm. A 130/60 R13 tyre is fitted at the front, while its rear counterpart measures 140/65/R13.

The smart escooter has a top speed of 45 km/h. The traction current is supplied by a state-of-the-art, 48-volt lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to the battery's capacity of 80 Ah, ranges of up to 100 kilometres are possible. The escooter can be charged at any standard household power socket, within three to five hours. The charging socket is stored at the front of the scooter underneath a hinged smart emblem, while the charger itself is integrated in the scooter.

The smart philosophy: stress-free and safe driving

Characteristic of smart vehicles is their distinctive functionality in conjunction with model high safety level. These two elements together make for stress-free and safe travel. The new smart escooter follows consistently this ideal: in doing so, it does not only meet all statutory requirements, but also sets new standards in its segment.

In contrast to conventional scooters, the smart escooter is equipped with ultra-modern safety features of a kind rarely seen even on modern motorcycles. These include an anti-lock braking system (ABS) specially adapted for a two-wheeler, an airbag integrated in the panelling beneath the handlebars, and Blind Spot Assist, which draws the rider's attention to vehicles following close behind him that are not visible in the "blind spot" of the rear-view mirrors - extremely useful when changing lanes, for example. Like in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, a triangular light is flashing in the rear-view mirror. So, common cause of accidents involving scooters is addressed.

Combined front/rear brake and ABS

To brake the smart escooter safely, just one touch suffices to retard both the front and rear wheel simultaneously. When the hydraulic disc brake at the front is actuated, an anti-lock braking system kicks in to ensure maximum braking effect even during emergency braking. The rear wheel is braked in parallel to the front wheel, though not mechanically but electrically.

This task is performed by the wheel hub motor in the rear wheel, which normally propels the scooter forwards. When the brakes are applied, the operating principle is reversed: the motor becomes a generator whose resistance provides the required braking effect. The resulting braking energy is converted into electrical energy and stored in the scooter's lithium-ion battery.

The anyway high energy efficiency of the escooter is further enhanced by additional solar cells at the front. These solar collectors are used to support the charging of the state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack whenever the sun is shining, also when the scooter is moving.

Always new, always intelligent - smart

When it comes to comfort and convenience, the escooter is also a smart through and through. Its attractive, creative yet pragmatic solutions are fully in line with the smart brand principle "easy to use". The smart escooter's intelligent and simple operating concept is particularly convincing.

One example is the charging socket, which is integrated externally in the panelling at the front, and therefore extremely easy to access. Like the smart fortwo, the escooter also disposes of an intelligent storage system. Underneath the seat there is a lockable stowage space with enough room for both the driver's and the pillion rider's helmets. The scooter's lithium-ion batteries are placed space-efficient and well protected behind the panelling in the foot area. The resulting mass centring and low centre of gravity promote agility and stable roadholding.

The smart escooter also offers driving fun for two: that is enabled by a fold-out seat which looks elegant when in use, and which appears to "hover" over the rear wheel. The footrests for the pillion rider automatically move into position when the second seat is folded out. If, instead, the rider requires more storage space, the pillion seat can be replaced with a luggage rack.

Linked via smartphone

The smartphone plays a special role for the escooter, serving as the scooter's control and communication centre. Before starting the electric scooter, the rider simply places the smartphone in a specially-designed mount in the centre of the handlebars. So, it is fully linked with the smart escooter. At the same time, immobiliser and anti-theft protection are deactivated, allowing the electric scooter to be started.

The new, further developed smart drive kit app allows the rider to use online services when making stops on the road. During the journey, the smartphone serves as the scooter's needed speedometer. It also displays the range and battery charge level and acts as a navigation system. Should the rider ever forget where he parked his escooter, the "GPS Tracking" smartphone app can help him identify the position.

The handlebar heating can also be controlled remotely - a comfort feature especially ideal on cooler days.
