2011 Ford Explorer’s Terrain Management System in detail [video]

Ford has announced that the all-new 2011 Explorer will be available with an advanced terrain management system that optimizes the four-wheel-drive system.

The system has five settings, including Normal, Mud, Rain, Sand, and Snow. "By adapting aspects of "the engine, the transmission, and the brakes, it will enable you to get out of those situations, versus the traditional traction control," Hoevener said.

The new terrain management system eliminates the guesswork when it comes to deciding between 4WD high, 4WD low and 2WD high. Drivers can simply choose the correct setting with the turn of a dial which has simple to read icons. The icons depict the various settings to best suit driving conditions.

When the all-new Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle goes in to
production later this year, it will offer an advanced terrain management
system that takes the mystery out of four-wheel drive by optimizing
powertrain behavior for specific situations and road conditions.

"Talking with customers told us that flexibility and freedom to tackle
any road, anytime is important to them," said Explorer Chief Nameplate
Engineer Jim Holland. "We saw the opportunity to eliminate a compromise by
adding an intuitive and efficient terrain management system that can
demystify four-wheel-drive control and enable the driver to properly match
4WD traction to the situations and road conditions they encounter."

Anecdotal customer feedback indicated the potential for driver confusion
with previous systems as to the best use of 4x4 high- and low-range
engagement.

Ford Explorer with intelligent 4WD and terrain management eliminates
guesswork, using simple icons to help drivers choose the correct setting at
the simple turn of a dial for the climate or surface situation they may be
driving. The icons depict the various settings to best suit driving
conditions:

Snow: For snow and slippery conditions. Limits torque to wheels
to prevent

Sand: For deep sand and

rutted conditions. Optimizes torque for increased traction

Mud: For slippery, muddy conditions. Allows wheel spin for
momentum build

Hill Descent: For Creeping down steep inclines, without using
the brake pedal

Normal: For all regular driving under normal road conditions.

"One of our goals with the new Explorer is to deliver four-wheel-drive
capability with easier and intuitively operated control," said Holland. "The
selectable settings are contingent upon weather and conditions, so the
system is easily operated and understood. Ford terrain management makes it
easier for SUV veterans, while making confidence-building Explorer
capability even more accessible to segment newcomers."

Employment of intelligent 4WD with Ford terrain management allowed
Explorer engineers to deliver the "any road, anytime" capabilities that SUV
buyers expect, while eliminating weight.

Less driveline mass helps the new Explorer with V-6 power deliver an
estimated 25 percent better fuel economy than the 2010 model.

"Intelligent 4WD with terrain management works by optimizing Explorer
powertrain and braking systems to best suit a variety of situations,
allowing vehicle behavior characteristics to provide appropriate traction
and driver control," said Holland. "We anticipate the system will really be
a stress-reducer and confidence-builder, especially when driving in adverse
conditions."

The re-engineered Ford Explorer goes in to production later this year.

2011 Opel Astra Sports Tourer Spied

We knew that the Astra Sports Tourer will be released later this year, and since we could not count on his presence in Geneva, it seems clear that Opel Paris Motor Show expected to be introduced in society. That will be in late September, but right now you can recreate eye-spy photos of the body relative who recently walked from fresh and in northern Europe.

We hear the powertrain options and interior from the standard Astra will carry over. The Astra's eight available engines include gasoline and diesels ranging in displacement from 1.3 to 2.0 liters and output from 95 to 180 horsepower. We also hear a hot GSi version is forthcoming.

2011 BMW 5-Series long wheelbase spy photos

Set to be unveiled later this year, possibly at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in April, the 5-Series LWB is expected to feature a wheelbase which is 12 inches (305mm) longer than the standard 5-Series. This means the LWB model will measure 5.04 m, which is just 30mm shorter than the previous 7-Series (E65).

In one photo, the car can also be seen with the Kia Forte Koup. If these pictures are any indication, look for the five-door to share similar front end styling, with a- and c-pillars matching up accordingly. As such, the side windows are noticably similar.

Spies have picked up a set of photos showing off the 2012 Kia Forte hatchback for the first time. The five-door was spotted on a frozen lake in Scandinavia where Hyundai and Kia have been testing several vehicles.

Kia has yet to announce the launch date for the five-door version of the Forte. The car will likely compete with the Ford Focus and Mazda 3.

Citroen DS4 winter test in Sweden

In an attempt to shake off spy photographers following close behind, the driver of this Citroen DS4 test prototype in northern Sweden got a little too anxious and overshot the entrance to the Bosch winter test facilities. In his haste he attempted to make a dramatic u-turn, but instead lost control of the disguised vehicle, lodging it into a snow bank. The sequence of photos show his attempts to free the vehicle as snow is flung into the air from the front wheels.

The irate test engineer now cornered by the photographers had no choice but to relent. As he wait for rescue, the engineer not only gave photographers a good look at the vehicle, but inadvertently opened the doors giving a glimpse of the interior as well as revealing it's a five door.

As the second model in the DS line, the High Rider concept which is set to make its public debut in Geneva next week previews the DS4 model. No specs were given on the car's powertrain, but it is said to be a "full hybrid" using a HDi engine with diesel particulate filter system (DPFS). The engine is mated to an electric motor at the rear axle, with capabilities of running on all-electric for short distances.

Ferrari 599 GTO Spied

Spies in Maranello, Italy, captured a few shots of a Ferrari 599 GTO prototype while undergoing testing. The street legal version of the 599XX was spotted with a new front bumper, grille, and wheels.

The new car will revive the most hallowed of Ferrari badges: GTO--the first time those three letters will have been used since the 288 GTO ended production almost a quarter of a century ago.

Reports suggest that the 599 GTO comes with a 700 PS (515 kW / 690 bhp) 6.0-liter V12 engine with a 9,000 rpm redline. At 3.2 seconds, speculation suggests the car will spring to 100 km/h a half-second quicker than the 599 GTB. Top speed could be around 350 km/h (217 mph).

Similar in theory to the F430 Scuderia and the 360 Challenge Stradale before that, the hardcore version of the 599 GTB has been captured here for the first time testing in and around the streets of Maranello. Visually, the car will look similar to the Laboratorio Technologico 599XX but not quite as extreme. Clear differences between the new GTO and standard GTB Fiorano are the blacked-out roof, new bumpers and side skirts and the huge rear diffuser.

2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class latest spy

The first facelift came less than two years after the vehicle was unveiled at 2005’s New York Auto Show and was implemented mainly to increase the car’s desirability. A cheaper rear-wheel drive model was added to the lineup as well as a more flexible seven-seater model, but other than that the R-Class has remained mostly unchanged.

Sales figures for the R-Class haven’t managed to live up to the expectations of the German luxury brand, but Mercedes-Benz is determined not to completely write-off its ‘Grand Sport Tourer’ just yet. The R-Class received a mild facelift in 2007 to help turn around flagging sales, but a second and more extensive update is in fact planned for the 2011 model year as previewed by these latest spy shots of a prototype caught testing in Europe.

For the next update Mercedes-Benz will give the car a major styling overhaul with a new front-end planned as well as a slightly revised rear and interior. Expected to be launched in the second half of the year, the new R-Class appears to receive the same squared-off treatment as seen on the A- and B-Class models sold overseas, including angular headlights and a larger more prominent grille.

At the rear there appear to be only minor changes, with a redesigned bumper, exhaust tips and LED tail-lamps.

2011 Aston Martin Vantage facelift first spy photos

The facelift will feature changes such as a slightly redesigned front bumper with new lower splitter, new 10-spoke 19-inch wheels as previously seen on the 2010MY Vantage and a rear diffuser that closely resembles the Vantage V12's diffuser. A higher rear spoiler is also included for better aerodynamic performance.

It is facelift time for the Aston Martin Vantage and we have some of the first spy pictures showing off this pretty beast, albeit under some disguise.

Interior changes also follow the 2010MY with a 1,000W B&O hi-fi system and a set of lightweight Kevlar and carbon seats.

Spy Shots: New Pagani C9 Testing In South Africa

Spy photos of a Pagani C9 prototype have surfaced on EasyCarBlog.com. The photos show the vehicle while testing in Upington, South Africa. Set near the Kalahari desert, the vehicle is being put through the paces in hot weather conditions reaching almost 39°C/102°F.

The new Pagani C9 will boast a 6.0-litre V12 engine with 700-horsepower, and this is proven by the new front clip as well as the large air intakes at the rear of the car. The torque is expected to be over 1,000Nm.
The new Pagani supercar will be created in a brand new facility based in Modena where the firm will create 40 units per year. This exceeds previous production rates from the company.

The mule is clearly a Pagani, possibly in the body of a Zonda F, with large wheel arches, arch-mounted side mirrors, split headlights, and an F1-style nose. Seemingly temporary dual tailpipes near the license plate replace the Zonda's center mounted quad pipes. It will be fitted with a carbon-titanium chassis, amongst 3,770 newly developed parts.

Annual production of the car should be kept at 40 units. The Pagani C9 is poised to replace the Pagani Zonda when it launches later this year with a €900,000 price tag.

Audi A7 Spy Winter Testing

It's been over a year since the Audi Sportback concept debuted at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, and based on these spy shots, it won't be much longer until the production version debuts – we're guessing that it could show up as early as next month's Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed A7, this four-door sedan sports a coupe-like profile and will slot between the A6 and A8 in Audi's lineup.

Think of it as a more stylish alternative to the A8 like the Volkswagen CC is to the Passat. Whether or not the market can bear the weight of yet another schizophrenic sedan remains to be seen, as they can already choose between the segment's creator, the Mercedes-Benz CLS, and cars like the Jaguar XF and aforementioned Volkswagen CC.

Engine options should run the typical Audi gamut, at least in Europe. They'll likely start with V6 and V8 offerings like the A8 above it, and there will surely be a TDI application or two, if not some manner of hybrid eventually. For the States, however, we can probably expect an eight-cylinder only approach. Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system will of course be included, and we can only surmise it will look stunning when finally takes to the stage.

As to pricing, Audi USA head Johan de Nysschen has already told us that the A7 will slot in "a little bit below" the A8 in terms of pricing, so we're ballparking an average price of around $80k.

Spy Shots: If The Saturn Vue Lived On...

In these fresh spy shots, we can see the new bumper, mirrors, and turn indicators. Our photographer assures us that those aren’t the correct headlights, however. What we can’t see from these photos are an updated interior, and possibly some updates to the engine, as well.

Is it possible that the four-brand General Motors may revive the Vue in the United States as a Chevrolet Captiva? We’ll have to wait and find out.

The triplets Opel Antara, Chevrolet Captiva and Daewoo Winstorm are getting ready for a facelift. Earlier photos have shown the prototype with a lot of camouflage in the front so this is the first time we actually see the front almost without camouflage. The grille has got some Infinity influences and the bumper is new designed but don’t mind the fake head lights, they are just part of the cammo. Other changes are the indicators in the side mirrors and an updated interior. We will probably find some new or modified engines under the hood as well when it’s time for the triplets to hit the showrooms in the middle of 2010.

Actually there used to be a fourth brother in the family, the Saturn Vue. But since the Saturn brand has been axed by GM it might be time for the Chevrolet version to hit the US market. In the world of smaller and more fuel efficient SUVs this could very well be a big seller in the US.
