Lexus unveils revised IS range

发表者 ddgg 8/27/10

Lexus has announced its plans to reveal an enhanced IS lineup at the upcoming Paris Motor Show next week. The new revised IS range has undergone its most significant changes since the current generation model was presented in 2005.

Most important changes are the engines – For 2011 The Is 220d will be replaced by the IS 200d and the revised IS will get rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming electrochromic rear view mirror and a new leather upholstery with heated front seats. There is a modest change to the rear light clusters and on IS 250 the exhaust tailpipe has a bolder circular profile in place of the previous ellipse.

All models benefit from styling tweaks to the bumpers, front grille and lights, and there are new alloy wheel designs and paint colours to choose from. Cars specced with the high-intensity discharge headlights now get LED daytime running lights, while buyers of the SE-I spec get auto wipers and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, and leather upholstery with heated front seats.

Press Release

  • Most significant changes to IS range since launch
  • Introduction of new IS 200d with improved fuel economy and lower emissions than previous IS 220d
  • IS 200d powered by revised 148bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine with diesel particulate filter (DPF), matched to six-speed manual transmission
  • 134g/km CO2 emissions earn IS 200d 18 per cent BIK company car tax rating and Band E Vehicle Excise Duty
  • Better fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 figures for IS 250 automatic and IS 250C coupe-convertible
  • All IS powertrains meet Euro 5 emissions standards
  • Exterior styling changes including headlight and rear light designs, revised front grille design, new exterior colours and alloy wheel designs
  • LED daytime running lights added to high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights
  • Revised equipment specifications
  • On-the-road prices remain unchanged
  • Available to order now

Sporty, smooth and unmistakeably Lexus, the IS has undergone its most significant revisions since the current generation model was launched in 2005.

Changes for the 2011 model year, to be formally revealed at the Paris motor show, are not simply a matter of sharper styling: Lexus has gone to the heart of the ownership experience to make the IS an even more appealing prospect, not least to those choosing it as a company car.

Central to this strategy is the introduction of the new IS 200d, which delivers improved fuel economy, lower emissions and reduced tax bills. Replacing the previous IS 220d, it is available to order now, priced from £24,350 (IS 200d SE) on the road.

The V6 petrol engine featured in the IS 250 and IS 250C coupe-convertible with six-speed automatic transmission has also been revised to meet future Euro5 emissions standards, achieving better fuel economy and CO2 emissions with no penalty in performance.

Focus of the styling changes is the F-Sport grade, which now echoes even more loudly the looks of its ultra-high-performance sister, the IS F, to strengthen its appeal among younger drivers. Meanwhile all IS models equipped with high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights gain LED daytime running lights and across the range there are new wheel designs, new rear light designs and a revised choice of exterior colours.

New IS 200d with enhanced driving quality
Replacing the previous IS 220d, the new IS 200d delivers stronger fuel economy, lower CO2 emissions and a more refined and smoother drive.

The new 148bhp version of the 2.2-litre diesel engine benefits from detailed engineering revisions and is equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to meet Euro 5 emissions standards and enhance the engine’s driving quality.

The changes include a re-shaped combustion chamber and the use of new-generation piezoelectric fuel injectors to give a more efficient, cleaner and complete fuel burn. Pressure in the common rail injection system has been increased. a higher flow exhaust gas recirculation valve has been introduced and the adoption of a new oil-cooled, variable nozzle turbocharger improves torque performance at low speeds and cuts overall engine noise.

Maximum power of 148bhp is delivered at 3,600rpm, with peak torque of 340Nm on tap from 2,000rpm, allowing for nought to 62mph acceleration in 10.2 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions are 134g/km, compared to 50.4mpg and 148g/km for the IS 220d.

As well as saving money at the pumps, owners enjoy a lower annual road tax charge – Band E rather than F for Vehicle Excise Duty. For company car tax payers there is a further bonus in the reduction of the Benefit-in-Kind tax rating from 21 to 18 per cent for the new model.

IS 250 automatic and IS 250C
For the 2011 model year the IS 250 becomes and automatic-only model, with revisions to the powertrain that ensure compliance with Euro 5 emissions standards.

Power and torque are unchanged from the super-smooth V6 are unchanged at 205bhp and 252Nm, but combined cycle fuel consumption improves from 31.7 to 33.6mpg, with a concurrent fall in CO2 output from 209 to 194g/km. As a result the model’s BiK tax rating is cut from 30 to 27 per cent.

Similarly, the improved engine is also under the bonnet of the 2011 IS 250C coupe-cabriolet, with an improvement in combined cycle performance to 30.7mpg and a 6g/km reduction in CO2 emissions to 213g/km.

Revised IS F-Sport
Changes to the IS 250 and 220d F-Sport models’ exterior and interior make them even more of a stand-out choice, heavily influenced by the styling of the ultra-high-performance IS F.

For 2011 F-Sport specification includes a new deep front spoiler with faired-in fog lights, new grille design and a rear spoiler with integrated stop light. The new-design 18-inch alloy wheels have a dark silver finish and black centre Lexus roundel, directly inspired by the IS F.

Inside the sports factor continues with F-Sport steering wheel, gear lever and sports pedals and front seats finished in leather and Alcantara. Extra touches of titanium-effect trim and a dark, anthracite roof liner are also introduced.

New specifications and options
Revisions elsewhere in the IS range included improvements to the SE-I specification to introduce rain-sensing wipers, an auto-dimming electrochromic rear view mirror and a new leather upholstery with heated front seats. There is a modest change to the rear light clusters and on IS 250 the exhaust tailpipe has a bolder circular profile in place of the previous ellipse.

New-look 17 and 18-inch wheels are available and the choice of exterior colours has been adjusted, with Ultra Blue metallic making its debut in the range.

Lexus has just released a new Lexus LFA commercial called Pursuit of the Perfect Pitch. The commercial shows a dyno of the Lexus in about as clean of an environment as can be had. The test is done in a room that is completely white. It’s reminiscent of a laboratory. So, what happens when Lexus tunes the 552 HP V10 engine of the LFA with the precision of a musical instrument?

Lexus hired a physicist for the "Pitch" spot to find a champagne glass that had the exact same pitch as the sound of its revving engine. When the engine reached 7,000-9,000 rpm, the fine-tuned exhaust hit the right frequency and the glass was shattered.

Dubbed "Pitch," the commercial was filmed in a specially-designed audio studio with the LFA on a dynamometer. Once the car is started, the driver (Scott Pruett) accelerates past 170 mph as the exhaust note gets louder and louder. Eventually, the champagne flute vibrates to the point of breaking.

The ad, called "Pitch," began airing this month. In part, it aims to show the efforts taken by Lexus' to make the LFA's unmistakable exhaust note. Lexus says, in a press release, "After studying the unmistakable soundtrack generated by Formula 1 cars at maximum revs, the team created the signature LFA sound beginning by emphasizing the secondary combustion frequency of the engine and then introducing primary, secondary and tertiary firing harmonics."

Press Release

In Pursuit of the Perfect Pitch

In a new commercial, Lexus puts the LFA supercar to the "glass test"

TORRANCE, Calif. (June 2, 2010)-It's a dramatic moment. In an ultra-modern audio studio, a Pearl White Lexus LFA supercar faces its challenger: a lone crystal champagne flute on a pedestal alongside a sleek amplifier. The vehicle's keyless ignition is engaged, and its rear wheels start spinning on a dynamometer. The engine roars louder and louder, the speedometer clicks past 150, 160, 170 mph. That's when the glass quivers and shimmies until - kshhh! - the flute shatters in gorgeous slow motion.

In this latest commercial from Lexus, which begins airing today, the LFA's signature engine sound achieves a feat reserved for virtuoso performers. The unique sound of 552-horsepower engine, which helps the vehicle reach top speeds in excess of 200 mph, shatters the glass without the use of CGI or camera tricks.

"The glass is actually broken by the precision sound of the vehicle," said Dave Nordstrom, vice president of marketing for Lexus. "We wanted to show just how deep our pursuit of perfection and commitment to innovation goes. The LFA was designed to deliver its own unique exhaust note, and this illustrates that beautifully."

The Signature Sound
Lexus worked with a team of engineers to enhance the acoustics of the LFA's 4.8L engine by meticulously tuning its multi-stage exhaust system. From the elegant, yet understated idle rumble to the goosebump-worthy wail of the high-revving V10 engine, the LFA was deliberately engineered to deliver a sound unlike that of any other road car.

After studying the unmistakable soundtrack generated by Formula 1 cars at maximum revs, the team created the signature LFA sound beginning by emphasizing the secondary combustion frequency of the engine and then introducing primary, secondary and tertiary firing harmonics.

The note is so unique that Lexus has even created an LFA ringtone that can be downloaded for free at http://www.lexus-lfa.com (click "Digital Premium").

The Glass Test
For the commercial titled "Pitch," Lexus employed a renowned physicist from a leading university to help determine which type of champagne glasses have the same frequency as the LFA's revving engine. (The pitch of the glass needed to precisely match the pitch of the engine in order for the flute to shatter.) Lexus racecar driver Scott Pruett then "drove" on the dynamometer until the engine revved to 7,000-9,000 rpm-creating just the right frequency of vibration to break the glass. And, yes, the entire crew wore earplugs during filming.

It's not the first time Lexus has used champagne glasses in an ad. Now an almost iconic expression of the brand's pursuit of perfection and pioneering innovation, they were originally used in the brand's launch commercial in 1989. In one of the most memorable TV spots in history, the new LS sedan revved to high RPMs as a pyramid of champagne glasses was carefully stacked on the car's hood. As the speedometer approached top speeds, champagne was poured into the top glass and elegantly flowed into the glasses below-without spilling a drop or razing the pyramid.

Most recently, in a 2006 commercial, the ground-breaking park assist feature on the LS 460 was engaged to dramatically and precisely parallel park the vehicle between two giant pyramids of champagne glasses-without touching a glass.

"Pitch" can be viewed at YouTube.com/lexusvehicles. It will air primarily on cable television and during sporting events such as the 2010 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and the USGA U.S. Open Championship. A 3-D version of the spot will play in theaters beginning July 2 to coincide with the debut of a 3-D summer blockbuster.

About Lexus
Lexus is the leading luxury automaker in the United States. With its reputation for high-quality products and exemplary customer service from its 228 dealers, Lexus has been the top-selling luxury automaker for ten years in a row. In addition, Lexus is the luxury hybrid leader, now offering four hybrids that provide the best in innovative technology and first-class luxury. When Lexus was established in 1989, it offered two models of vehicles. Now, more than 20 years later, Lexus offers variations of 11 vehicles, from the entry-level IS 250 to its first V10 supercar, the LFA.

Lexus has released a special Nurburgring version of the LFA Supercar.

The package is limited to 50 units worldwide of the total 500-unit production run. Only 150 LFAs are designated for America, so simple math would suggest only 15 or so will have the option package.

The special edition comes in four colors: whitest white, orange, black and matte black, with the matte paint job costing an additional $20,000. There are also three interior colors: black, red and violet.

Engine wise the enhancements include a modified version of the 4.8-litre V10 engine with 562-horsepower, or only 10-horsepower more. Gear-shift time will be reduced to 0.15 seconds — a 0.05 second decrease.

According to the automaker, the LFA Nürburgring Package will cost US$70,000 (MSRP) on top of the US$375,000 (€295,300) potential customers are expected to part with. A matt black exterior can be had for an extra US$20,000.

Lexus Hybrid Bicycle Concept

发表者 ddgg 4/28/10

Lexus has used its wealth of hybrid knowledge to create its latest L-finesse design concept, the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle. The all-wheel drive hybrid bicycle concept combines the pedal power of the rider with a 25.9v lithium-ion battery.

Originally unveiled at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, the bike features a 240W electric motor and a 25.9V lithium-ion battery. The motor has two modes (Eco and Power) and the battery is recharged by regenerative braking. Other goodies include all-wheel drive, an electric eight-speed transmission, and carbon fiber construction.

With an engaging yet elegant frame, the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle utilises hybrid power, an electric eight-speed transmission and lightweight carbon fibre construction.

The carbon fibre construction shares the same light-but-strong composite materials technology that was used on Valentino Rossi's MotoGP-winning motorcycle.

LEXUS HYBRID TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN INNOVATION ADVANCE ON TWO WHEELS

Introducing the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle Concept

Lexus has established itself as an industry leader in bringing advanced
technologies to the premium car market. Now it has applied the same thinking
on a smaller scale to create the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle, a design concept the
captures the fundamental engineering and design values of the brand, but
with two wheels rather than four.

In every aspect this is Lexus, from the L-finesse design language of the
engaging and elegant frame, to the application of hybrid power, an electric
eight-speed transmission and lightweight carbon fibre construction.

Lexus has brought what is one of the only two examples in existence to
the UK for the first time, following the bicycle's debut at the 2009 Tokyo
motor show. Its arrival coincides with the announcement of Lexus's title
sponsorship of the Great British Bike Ride, a four-day charity fun ride that
will see hundreds of cyclists following a course from Land's End to the home
of English rugby at Twickenham.

Lexus has pioneered high performance, low emissions and optimum fuel
efficiency with its full hybrid Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain technology.
The Hybrid Bicycle adopts similar principles, with the pedal power of the
rider boosted by assistance to the front wheel from a 240W electric motor,
via a 25.9V Lithium-ion battery, with a choice of Eco or Power modes. And,
as with Lexus Hybrid Drive, there is an energy regeneration function that
helps recharge the battery by capturing kinetic energy generated under
braking.

The Lexus Hybrid Bicycle has all-wheel drive, by means of a belt system.
It is equipped with an electric eight-speed Shimano internal gear system,
which references the sophisticated eight-speed shift-by-wire automatic
transmission of Lexus's LS 600h limousine. The carbon fibre construction
shares the same light-but-strong composite materials technology that was
used on Valentino Rossi's MotoGP-winning motorcycle.

There are no current plans for the Lexus Hybrid Bicycle to become a
production model.

Lexus CT 200h leaked photos

The full hybrid is based on the LF-Ch concept shown at the Frankfurt show in 2009. It features a 1.8-liter four-cylinder VVT-i petrol engine and a magnet synchronous electric motor. The company has not published performance details, but they do say that the motor is "powerful." Nickel-metal hydride is used for the high voltage battery. Power is sent to the front wheels via a electrically-controlled contiuously variable transmission, or E-CVT for short.

An anonymous source has e-mailed what appears to be a digital press kit produced by Lexus for next week's Geneva Motor Show. The pages of the kit reveal photos and details of the Lexus CT 200h five-door hybrid, set for a debut at the Geneva event.

Lexus wants to use this car to prove that full hybrids do not have to be boring drives. They claim the car has "superior handling agility" to suit their customers' wishes, and three driving modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport) to adjust to different situations. Again, Lexus remained vague about sprint times, overtake ability, and top speed.

The car remains a sleek five-door, just like the concept. It has sporty overhangs at the front and back, and a well-placed rear spoiler. The car looks to have LED rear lighting. At 4,320mm long, the car is 140mm shorter than the Toyota Prius. The Lexus is 1,765mm wide by 1,430mm high; 20mm x 50mm less than the Prius. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, and features McPherson/front- and double wishbone rear suspension.

The leaked information also reveals data about Lexus LFA sales orders which states allocation will be fixed in April, while individual orders will be confirmed to customers in May. Demand has surpassed the announced 500 units set to be produced.

The Lexus IS F is a curious car. 416 bristling horsepower, one of the world's sweetest-sounding engines and an 8-speed flappy-paddle 'box that shifts faster than you blink are all excellent. However, it looks a little odd, has funny tailpipes and weighs too much. That last little bit - the IS F's big bones - turn a really great road car into something of a pig on the track. We know this because we drove an IS F at Laguna Seca.

Take a look at the field of 2010 SuperGT competitors and something's amiss. Nissan's been campaigning its new GT-R in the series for two years and Honda recently revealed the HSV-010 before its inaugural run in the series this May. What's missing? A new competitor from Toyota.

Jyuichi Wakisaka and Andre Lotterer took the overall GT500 win in the team's Lexus SC430 last year, but that model is not long for this world, so it's just a matter of time before Toyota fields a new car in the series. So what's set to take the SC430's place? The answer's obvious: the Lexus LFA.

Although Toyota's yet to confirm the LFA's entrance (we're expecting an announcement later this year), Iain Chandler, a skilled 3D artist hailing from Australia, has rendered a GT500-class LFA, complete with six sets of livery. While it's far from official it's a pretty good indication of what to expect when Toyota finally pulls the trigger, and Lotterer seems to approve – he posted the images on his site.

Toyota's budget version of the Lexus HS 250h, the new Sai Hybrid, just went on sale in Japan in the beginning of the month, but the automaker's TRD division has already lined up some subtle visual and performance upgrades for the sedan. In addition to the selection of aero bits, TRD has also released a new grille insert, a sport suspension kit, specific oil and fuel caps as well as a choice of 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels available in various designs.
